  1. I won't say who mine is. Because if I say it right away, a certain kind of fan will roll their eyes. But I want you to hear me out. I love my favorite character because of her indomitable spirit, and the friends she's made. She's not the most powerful character. Far from it. She's decently intelligent, having at least an elementary education. She is surrounded by friends she cares for, though can get stuck in her own head. She finds happiness in the simple things in life, and never worries about things outside her friends, hobbies and being a better person every day. But when you need her, she'll move heaven and earth to be beside you. That character is: Fanon edition. The reason why I say that is...if you look at her in just the lore. She doesn't have a lot of the details that we think of when we hear her name. She tends to be a loner and isolated, a far cry from her fanon form with more friends than anyone else in the setting. She has a pretty petty personality, and usually seems bored and listless. But a lot of her fanon qualities just make her seem more real. Her canon details aren't without their merits though; she can actually spell and knows basic arithmetic. Making her (probably) more intelligent than much of the cast. And while the fumos and memes help her fanon's carefree nature, I just like how nothing stops her. When she wants to do something, she keeps trying until she succeeds. I find that part of her inspiring. If we are talking about strictly canon though, definitely Yukari. I'm not even going to thirst-post like I do for a joke on Discord. The woman's one of the most crafty figures in the lore, walking the fine line between an ally and an enemy at times. Probably not top-ten most powerful, but she is definitely one of the strongest Youkai around. She cares deeply for the setting, and even disregarding her fanon personality traits, seems to have a soft spot for Ran and Reimu. Even if she doesn't treat them like her daughter or niece in the games.
  2. Currency in Gensokyo For average everyday exchanges, most people—whether Human, Youkai, Spirit or Devil—use Mon. A currency traditionally used in pre-modern Japan. These appear as a round, decorative coin with a square or round hole in the center. These may be made of gold, silver, iron, bronze or even copper. Their worth may be less obvious than in Outside currency, but in general their size and the metal used indicate their value. Be warned natives will often try to use your ignorance to their advantage, claiming the coin is worth less than you suppose. The coins themselves are named for the unit of weight, which reflect their value, rather than the metal inherently used. If you are uncertain, insist on your coin being weighed by a third party. Mon are the base currency, equivalent to ‘cents’ or individual ‘yen’ on Earth. These are usually made of copper or iron. More valuable coins are cast in Silver or Gold and are known as Shu, Bu and Ryo. Gensokyo’s insular economy means ‘exchange rates’ or inflation are alien concepts, insuring a stable if stagnant economy. 4000 Mon are equal to 16 Shu. 16 Shu is equal to 4 Bu. 4 Bu is equal to 1 Ryo. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= It did not take long for the young magician’s cries to draw attention. Even along a street so desolate as this. The farmers and fishermen may have been hard at work, the craftsmen and merchants minding their tables. But his specialty had always been youngsters. Even if he loathed being typecast as a children’s performer. Across from him, in the courtyard of the Heida School a number of youths played among themselves. Some engaging in simple games of ball and rope. Others in make-believe, aided with sticks and stones. One of these chased a fellow student, before Oscar’s cries drew his gaze. Most of the townsfolk seemed to be fairly like what he would expect of a Japanese village. This one was much the same, except for one feature. His straight, short hair was a rich red. The youth glanced back at his friends, before hurrying out towards the street. Brown eyes assessing him curiously. Despite this, he seemed skiddish of the world around him. Scurrying across the road with a burst of speed, before stopping to stare. Body tensed as if expecting Oscar to jump at him… Oscar felt his heart sink at his approach. Both because his first victim was a child, and because he wouldn’t have much money. Still, presentation and confidence were key in pulling in others. He flashed a grin. Extending a hand with the ball. “Ahh, a brave soul, at last! Do you have the courage to challenge my arcane mastery?” The young man’s brown eyes gazed up in nervous wonder. Before eventually managing a nod. “Very well then! Place your wager on the counter. If you succeed, I will double your money.” With sudden animation, his hands went to his side. Feeling for a small ring of bronze coins. Oscar’s heart sank again as the child pulled the leather cord and dropped it on the ‘table’. Not only did he have no idea what kind of money it was, the kid didn’t even have that much. And he didn’t need to be a master magician to know the fact they were bronze meant they were borderline worthless. Focus, Oscar. Presentation. “Very well, child.” With an agile motion, the ball rolled beneath the cup, marked only with a tap of the finger. And with a flurry of motion, Oscar shifted the cups in place. Whirling them around one another with a finesse worthy of the best con man. The young man’s eyes remained on the display, mouth open slightly. Until the cups came to a stop. “Now choose! Which of these contains my magic ball? Do you have the will to see past the veil of our reality?” To the side, Agappa sat. A frozen expression of fascination bordering on horror upon her face. Eyes staring levelly with the table. To the young man’s credit, he ignored her, which was more than Oscar could say. Instead extending a small finger, and bringing it against the correct cup. “Its this one...right?” Oscar had to admit. The kid had sharp eyes. Which made his satisfaction as he leaned the cup backwards to reveal nothing inside all the more satisfying. The youth stared transfixed. It was only then Oscar noticed, a few others were standing nearby watching. “W-wow! How did you do that?!” The child exclaimed, gazing at the cup. Oscar smiled knowingly at him. It took him a few moments to realize that he had lost his money. Those brown eyes turned low, hair covered his face as he reached slowly for the coins on their string, and extended it to Oscar. ...Damn. It was probably all he had too… “Keep it, son.” “Huh?” The magician smiled down at the surprised youth. “I said I would double your money if you chose the right one. I never said anything about taking yours. But…” The motion was one most kids back home knew, though he doubted any would know it here. It would be worth a hell of a lot more than five cents. Oscar extended his hand towards the young man, who could only nervously watch as the hand slipped behind his ear. Before producing a single nickel. The expression on his face was priceless. “Woooahhh...you really are a magician!” Oscar grinned at that. Almost as widely as the youth. Sometimes being the good guy paid off. His hand rose, giving the kid a ruffle of his tidy red hair. “There you are, kid. Tell your friends about me.” The kid turned with an excited cry. Holding aloft his strange, newfound treasure as he rushed back to the others. Well. His con-act had only just started, and he was already down five cents. But he seemed to have made a good impression, and already other children were hurrying, both to watch his trick, and to wager their money they could chose the right cup. Eventually, he’d stop feeling guilty about this… =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= You've time for another set of customers! Who shall it be? = A group of students from the Temple School out on recess. 3. Heida Temple and Manor In spite of being a full sized temple, Heida is one of the lesser religious sites around the Human Village, being less significant than either the Myouren Temple or the Hakurei Shrine. What it lacks in religious significance however it makes up for in secular value. It is owned and maintained by the Heida Family, perhaps the most influential human family in Gensokyo's history, who maintain a large mansion on the property. It also connects to the Heida Temple School, discussed elsewhere. The site is frequently used as a safe area for children to play, or as a meeting place for village elders to discuss the affairs of the village. It is likely the most secure place you will have ready access to, and is the beating heart of the village. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= It was half an hour later that Oscar stepped out into the streets of the Village. Agappa following just behind him. The handbag wrapped around her shoulders hanging on her back. Hood drawn closely to hide her face as they went. The two had passed through the village the night before, but only now in the light of day did he have a look at this place. And just a glance was enough to fill him with dread. The road before the Heida Temple was well paved, with stone bricks lining the way. But the roads from this main path were made of packed dirt. Simple cottages, made of timber and paper, lined the road. Grand mansions and halls, which gave way to more humble abodes. The street was mostly empty, the working men long ago left for their jobs. Though laborers could be seen in front of small storefronts working on their wares, and small throngs of women in brighter clothes talked among themselves. There were no streetlights, only unlit paper lanterns. There were no phones, only the low sound of conversation. There were no blue jeans or shopping malls, only sturdy cloth and small storefronts. Where even am I? “Hungry.” The comment was almost enough to make him jump, despite the calm statement was radically different from Rumia’s forlorn tone. His own eyes flicked to Agappa, who calmly returned the gaze. “Why even follow me then? Your friend wanted you to torment Cirno. Why come with me?” The question only earned him a mute stare. Her mouth slightly agape while she stared up at him with big brown eyes. Before she blew her cheeks out, and sucked in her lips. Oscar rolled his eyes, even if he expected an answer like that. Still, after yesterday, her creeping company was better than only having a sleepy old rabbit for a companion. “Come on kiddo. We’ll get some money then find a bite to eat. Whatever you eat.” “No money.” “Not a problem. Just stick by me.” It took the two some time to find what he was looking for. What it actually was, Agappa wasn’t sure. But he had asked for a table, and the rough old piece of garbage was close enough. A stone, two bricks and a half-broken piece of pottery completed his stand. So it was with mute interest she watched Oscar finish setting up, not fair from the temple. Before reaching into his pocket. It emerged a moment later, a sturdy red cup made of something unknown in his hand. Peeling it away to reveal two more inside. Setting each on the table carefully, he pulled a ball from another pocket. It made her curious. It was plain and white, larger than the largest marble but much too small for a game ball. Setting the cup over it, Oscar gave her a knowing look. Before giving the top a firm tap. Delicately lifting it, to reveal nothing was there. “WAAGH!” The girl in her raincoat stumbled backwards, falling to the ground. Oscar only laughed, satisfied at her overreaction. “Relax. Its just magnets. That tap makes the magnet go down, pulling the ball through a false bottom in the cup. Presto, no more ball.” Explaining a trick was something a magician was supposed to never do. But from the look on her face, he may as well have told her it was an arcane ritual told to him in a dream. If she represented the average native, he was sure to make a killing today. All he had to do, was make sure his performance was worth whatever wager they chose to make. With a show of confidence he had not felt in months, he swept his arms to either side. The red of his cape fanning before him as he shouted into the near empty square. “Ladies and gentlemen, come one and all! I, the great and powerful Oscar Diggs challenge you to a battle of wits! Choose the correct cup, and double your money! Dare you match minds with one who has unlocked the arcane?!” =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Who comes first to your performance? = A group of unfamiliar students, enjoying a break from their classes. 4. No worries. I'm enjoying not having all the answers constantly. :) Writing does sometimes feel a little contrived. There's a starting goal, and an end goal, and everything in between is how you get there. If you've seen a Hollywood movie in the past ten years, you know how that feels. So I'm enjoying being thrown off now and then. And don't worry, I don't think Oscar understood that chapter either. Yes and no. He's safe from scary monsters running around in the woods for now. But he has to eat and has no real talents for anything the locals would consider useful. So he'll have to find some way to earn himself money. Additionally there will be challenges socially. Some people really won't like him, and we'll have to deal with that. There's also the exploration of the village, which may have its own secrets and dangers. Don't worry. You'll need all the tricks you can get. About a year ago I tried to start a bunch of RPs in the RP channel Eientei. It went alright at first, but we kept cycling through members, and I soon got overwhelmed by IRL. But I had various NPCs planned for the games. Oscar himself was one of them, the leader of a corporation of humans.
  5. And the readers choose the option I threw in for a laugh. Don't worry, I already have some plans for your chosen branch. Though this may be more of a long-term goal. I haven't gotten beyond the first couple Touhou games (RIP desktop), but my understanding is the Dream World is inhabited by one person (who isn't a dream doppelganger), Doremy. Which is a lot of information most characters don't know, much less Oscar. We still have options though. We can meld the Fantasy World, World of Fantasies etc from the 98 era into the Dream World. Locations with little detail and many superficial similarities, which would tie more characters and entryways to the Dream World. Orrr...time for more OCs. Which I think you'll find more exciting~ We're about to start the next chapter. Hoping to include a 'character sheet' for Oscar when I do, which will give you a rough outline of his skill at each reaction. The next chapter will be focused on Oscar establishing himself in the Human Village. Earning money, starting a business, making friends and enemies, and trying to find out what happened to him. We'll see many faces, some friends reunited or met for the first time. But he will be reuniting and meeting enemies as well. Not all threats however are monsters running wild in the woods. Some can doom you with a few words. Keep your new friends close, and your favorite friends closer. Next, a question for you guys. The GSG I've been trying to walk a fine line with, showing comedy, mystery, wonder and even horror. Its not really meant to be an action or romance game, with what action there is being quick and deadly, and romance (in future) being fleeting yet meaningful. I am curious, would you all be interested in more fanfiction from yours truly? I've characters I had planned for my failed revival of Eientai who I think I could make a story around, which you may enjoy. Though each has very different vibes. I think there's only interest enough for one or two. But if enough people think they would enjoy a second story, I would be happy to write it out when I have time. A pest of a Youkai is newly born in a pit of Sin. But his heart burns with a fire few have ever seen! Driven by his noble spirit, he sets out on a merry quest across Gensokyo in search of true love! With justice in his fists and truth in his heart, can he smite evil and uncover his truest of loves? A story set in the future, around two matured spirits of the past. An unlikely dark knight saves the life of a pale lady. Tying the two together in a tale of young love, gothic opulence and rock 'n roll. Yet even as he seeks her favor, can he prove himself? Not merely to her, or her family and friends, but himself that hard-headed maid? A visiting vampire, on a spirited trip away from her prairie home. Eager to take in the sights, enjoy the ambience, and relax on her first vacation in 250 years. Unaware she is about to become involved in a silent war between an untrustworthy hag, and a childhood rival. A lost dreamer awakens in a world of fantasy. With a mouth that does not speak and eyes which do not open, can she can she traverse this mysterious world and set her roots in Gensokyo? Or will her bizarre powers and strange mannerisms sew chaos around her? Lastly, would you all have a preference for where I'd export this, if I ever work this CYOA into a full on fan fiction? Anywhere you'd recommend?
  6. Shinigami ‘Spirit of Death’ A term with many meanings, a Shinigami could refer to any number of entities. In colloquial term however, the term refers to the Western concept of a grim reaper, or angel of death. These figures have some resemblance to other Shinigami. With their pale-grey skin, grim aura and inhuman features. However Shinigami defy attempts to categorize them, whether as a Youkai, Spirit or Kami. Beings drawn to death, they may haunt locations tied to death, such as graveyards or battlefields. They may afflict the recently deceased, or torment those who have outlived them. A scant few however operate in service to the Yama. Collecting the souls of the dead and delivering them to judgment. Then to be guided, whether to purgatory, punishment or paradise. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Slowly, Oscar’s green eyes fluttered open. Passively observing his surroundings. He was no longer in the spare room of the Heida Temple, with its rattan floor mats and faintly off-smelling futon, all lit by one candle. Instead, he was back in his bedroom. A room shaped exactly how he remembered it. He was on his bed with its unwashed sheets. His diplomas framed upon the wall over a computer desk flecked with stacks of paper. The screen humming on an all too familiar website, and an overflowing email. Beside it was a dresser, set with a magician’s accouterments. The smashed frame of the photograph laying where he had left it. To his right was the bedside table. Headache and sleeping medication spilled out under a lamp. Past it was his closet, and Houdini’s cage. All illuminated by the light of the rising sun… The room was...less comforting, than he had hoped it would be. As strange and frightening as his dream had been, it had been equally wonderful. Wriggle, Daiyousei, Cirno, even Agappa had been a happy distraction from his troubles. Half of them had been truer friends than any he had known. Well. Best not to lie in bed all day. With a groan, he swung his legs to the side. One hand rubbing against his face. Slowly, he stood. The motion felt effortless, his body light as a feather. He might have chalked it up to a particularly good night’s sleep, had he not realized he didn’t feel his hat. Houdini must have slipped out of it during the night. A hand reached behind him idly… And felt only cold skin. For a moment, he was back in Muenzuka. Lost among the mocking faces of the dead. Dread ran along his spine as he slowly turned. There, lying upon the made bed with its stained sheets, was Oscar. Still dressed in his magician’s outfit he had worn the day before. Eyes closed as though in sleep. He was not sure how long he stood there. It may have been seconds, or hours. The only thing that pulled him from his thoughts, was the realization there was a mass which had not been there before. A shade stood in the corner of the room. A gloomy mass that seemed to tower over even his tall form. It stepped from the darkness, ignoring the awakened Oscar in favor of the other. Its form was wrapped in dark red dress, which he almost took for sack cloth. A pale sallow face gazed down at him from under golden locks. Reflected in a scythe she held to one side. “Another one.” She let out a slow sigh. Gazing down at his form with an inscrutable expression. Then in a flash of motion, she hefted the blade with one hand. Her calm expression shattering into one of pure rage, even as the scythe sliced over his sleeping form. A cool, blue light emerged from the sleeping Oscar Diggs’ mouth. One she watched, her implacable calm back in place. "Ah, I miss my days as a gatekeeper…the Outside World is not as fun as it used to be.” Her left arm retreated to her side. Pulling from her belt a wrought iron lantern. From Oscar’s mouth emerged a ball of white-blue flame, drifting into the lantern as though in a trance. The spirit of death slammed the door shut. Before lifting it to her face. The deathly pale face easing to either side as a knowing grin rose. “The Yamas will decide your fate now. Best start praying.” His eyes blinked. The world had again shifted. He was hemmed in by four walls of glass. A set of amber eyes leering down at him. Before she let the lantern fall. Catching on a chain, his form bounced in place in its prison. His body lay behind him, as unmoving as when he first arose. The only movement coming as his hat fell away, the elderly Houdini scrambling on top of his unmoving head with unusual energy. One the woman took no notice of. His captor only began to whistle, as the world grew dark… The low sound of a bell’s toll turned his blood to ice. Reality returned in a rush as Oscar sat up in bed. Though the dolorous cry was eased by the sounds of idle chatter and giggling in the hallway beyond. Again, his eyes examined his surroundings. The room was again lit by the light of the rising sun. He was lying on a futon, with only a couple stains. Across from him, Agappa lay curled up in a blanket. Fast asleep. The figure of Houdini curled on top of her. It took a few moments for him to catch his breath. A few more to find his way to the bathroom, and make himself presentable. But once he had washed the sweat from his face and taken advantage of a tub in the room, Oscar emerged, dressed once more. Back in the waking world… Or was he still in the dream? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= What now, Magician? = Breakfast will right your mind after a bad night’s sleep. And you can talk more with Keine. = You've been alone and afraid for too long. Go out into the courtyard, see if you can meet some friends! = Was this really a dream? Perhaps an expert on...craziness, here can tell you who that was. = Wake up Agappa. I have questions. = A healthy body compliments a healthy mind. A walk around town will do a world of good.
  7. Hakutaku ‘White Marsh’ Also known as Kutabe or Bai Ze, the Hakutaku is said to be an ancient and wise beast. Usually found in ground holy to Shinto. They possess nine eyes, as well as six horns. They are said to appear in lands ruled by a virtuous figure. The Hakutaku is a mark of good luck, and is highly knowledgeable of monsters, history, human languages and nature. Because of their immense knowledge, evil Youkai fear them. Knowing the Hakutaku know their weaknesses as well. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The woman was in some ways unassuming. She definitely didn’t look like Kimiko with her menacing, lean figure. Though it struck Oscar she was perhaps the first adult he had interacted with aside from the wild Youkai. What that meant, he wasn’t entirely sure of. But given the Village wasn’t overrun with hungry Youkai, that meant they had a protector. One which was probably her. It would be best then to be honest with her. “I am Oscar. Though my friends call me Osu. And this is--” “Ningen.” Agappa eased her head around his frame. Murmuring that word from before. While it meant nothing to Oscar, his interrogator seemed to recognize it. Her eyebrow crooked, though she said nothing. Allowing him to continue. “...And ah, Ningen. We’re new arrivals to...this land. Our friends were trying to guide me here to the Human Village when we were separated.” “Oh yes?” The white-haired figure said, brown eyes lingering unerringly on his green. “Who might these friends of yours be?” “We uh, just met, but their names were Rumia, Cirno...Wriggle...Dai-chan, and I think Mystia.” The woman on the other side of the desk had been giving him a very penetrative look all the while. Almost as if she expected the worst of him. But the moment those names slipped from his lips, a strange transformation washed over her face. The lips of the woman pressed together in thought. Before blossoming in a smile. “I see. In that case, I may have misjudged you, Magician. I apologize. Though I trust you understand. Until I speak with those five, I can’t let you out into the village freely. You are welcome to spend the night, and if they vouch for you, you may be allowed to stay.” It was less than Oscar hoped for. But a warm bed was relief enough. All he could do was wearily nod his acceptance. The woman across from him stood. Looking more pleased than he had expected. “I am Keine Kamishirasawa. The head teacher here at Heida Temple School. Now, follow me.” The dim halls of the school passed by dully. Though Oscar had little perception of them. The only thing he recalled between speaking with Keine and the warm embrace of sleep was an exchange of pleasantries, and the feeling of a soft pillow under his head. Before his dreams set in… =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= What do you dream, great and powerful magician? = A stranger's memory of a place lost to time... = A mind you do not know touches your own. = A premonition of coming danger. = An unwanted visitor awakens you suddenly in the night. = You awaken back in your bed in the Outside World... Do not fear choosing the wrong answer. All will be revealed in time...
  8. Hello again friends and readers. :) I am glad to see you all enjoyed our latest entry. Especially given my concerns over that page. Definitely agree its good to be out of the forest. I mean, I like scary monsters in the woods as well as anyone else. But it was going on for a bit, and having Team 9 around did kind of deflate things. Sure, even my favorite baka isn’t that much of a threat, especially for a maneater. But with 5 fairies/youkai, plus Agappa, it did make the sense of danger less palpable. And their powers did synergize well at times. Don’t worry Kymoh. The Indian Rope Trick will have its day. :) For those who can’t wait, in its simplest form the Indian Rope Trick is that trick where a rope goes completely rigid going upward. Its a favorite of early 20th century magicians, and there are half a dozen ways the trick was achieved. Its mostly considered a fraud, but there is a way to do it legitimately. Glad Kimiko’s showing she still has teeth. Don’t worry, you’ll all have plenty of opportunities to hype him up for the confrontation, against both the Maneaters and other factions. Even if Oscar isn’t meant for head-on confrontations, that is an option, and if you plan well and the opportunity arises, it may be one he triumphs handily. Glad Keine didn’t seem too awful. From her perspective, she’s being protective of her home and the people there, from someone who openly declared he wasn’t human. Of course, Oscar has no idea what ‘Magician’ means. But she does, and would know even the good ones can be a pain to deal with. Hoping to have an entry in the next couple days, though that depends on how hard the corporate overlord’s whip cracks. So, no promises are made. But I am hopeful.
  9. 1. When did you get into Touhou? I'm playing through the PC-98 era now, but I didn't really get into Touhou until a couple years ago. 2. What made you first interested in Touhou? B. Secondary works (fangames, music, manga, and art) C. Social influence (friends, family, and others) D. Other (Explain for this choice) Would you believe, fan mods? Don't get me wrong, I had a vague idea Touhou was an anime game with good music about cute girls and magic. But I didn't really care until I was playing through mods for Mount and Blade. One of them, Gensokyo Warfare, puts you in the world of Gensokyo. It was only then I realized both how many fan mods for various games there were, how many friends online talked about Touhou, and I realized just how many years I had seen fan art and references to the series. My friends began infecting me with the brainrot and here I am. 3. What made you stay with Touhou? I really like the community. I think its creative, thoughtful and interesting. But most of all chill. After seeing so many things I loved as a child being corporatized and losing their identity, a series which feels about the same as it did when I saw my first reference to Touhou on 4chan nearly 20 years ago is a welcome sight. Its also one of the few settings that feels like it would be a nice place to live. There are all kinds of cozy settings where the danger is passing, true. And Touhou has its fair share of tricksters and even killers. But it feels like it would be a cozy and peaceful place to live overall. Its an isekai world that feels more like its predecessors like the Wizard of Oz, than modern isekai fantasies. With its Eastern roots giving it a more unique flavor. 4. What level of fanbase do you like to interact with? B. Medium (Smaller end communities such as this site (MS), MOTK and a couple others) C. Small (Friends/friend groups, family, and others) Touhou's always felt like a weirdly personal game to talk about. Whether its reaction images on 4Chan, Youtube fan works or chatting on Discord. Its part of its charm to me. 5. How familiar are you with Touhou lore and story? B. Average (only know about some character backstories and some story of games, but not to the point of remembering everything) I like watching lore videos or browsing the wiki sure, but I am only so deep in the early games. And despite me dropping trollish questions frequently, I could listen to my friends tell me obscure bits of lore all day.. 6. Do you think Touhou is the hardest bullet-hell game? I think some Touhou levels are pretty impressive even by hardcore standards. People still talk about Flandre's extra stage from two decades ago. And there are bosses harder than her in the series. But I think people who say Touhou is the hardest are people like me who suck at bullethells and played only a couple. There are surely much harder games out there. 7. Do you think Touhou Gacha harmed the franchise? Its too soon to be sure. Gacha is well accepted in the mobile market. But its clearly having a chilling effect on the PC/Console market. And while it provides a massive spike to a series' popularity, it seldom seems to last past the Gacha. It can also have a bad effect on official words. Why spend 200 million on a new game that will make a billion dollars, when you can spend 2 million on a Gacha update with sexy skins and make the same? While I doubt Zun's beer budget is anywhere near 200 million, that same psychology may creep in over time. With manga projects or spinoffs potentially being shot down, not because they won't make money but they won't make as much. idk. We'll see. 8. Is piracy within Touhou good or bad? 1. It's good I've gone over this in extreme detail in another thread, so I will only repeat myself in brief. We live in an era where billion dollar companies are shutting down ROM sites, letting some games be lost to history. Piracy isn't a good thing to do if there are other methods of buying the game. But if we accept games are not just entertainment but art, then piracy isn't just about 'lol free thing'. Its about preserving art. I am sure if I ever want to do something official with Touhou, Zun will find this and refuse to work with me. But I want to be clear. You aren't proud of your early works, I get that. I'll still pay you $10, even $20 bucks for Eastern Wonderland or Mystic Square. My offer remains on the table, until then I'll play the story of Zun's growth as a creator from Moriya instead of Steam or the eShop. 9. How flanderized do you think Touhou characters are? C. 5–6 seared, but not charred I think it depends on the character. Some have grown less flanderized over time, like (ironically) Flandre. She was always just 'crazy serial killer locked in basement'. Even I was familiar with the famous image of a bloody laughing evil Flan. But as time passed, she had her second appearance in years. Now she's seen more for her cuteness than being 'locked in the basement for 500 years because she craycray'. I think a lot of flanderization boils down to the fans wanting to like the characters. Kogasa for instance in the lore tends to be fairly spiteful. Nowhere near as bad as say Reimu, but still, she threatened to burn down Moriya. Nevertheless, a lot of fans prefer to see her as a cheery, happy person. Maybe even a little ditzy, because that makes her a more likeable person, and it means she would live a happy life. Even when people thought of Flan as the 'murder one', that's kind of the teenage fantasy. To live in luxury, be insanely powerful and dangerous, and to be left alone. In some cases it actually makes a character more interesting. Koakuma and Daiyousei being the best examples of this. According to Zun, Koakuma is just another demon, spiteful and mean. While Daiyousei is another fairy prankster. Don't get me wrong, both have fairly dull personalities in the fandom. Daiyousei could never survive without Cirno in canon or fanon. But her kind and considerate nature makes her a fun contrast to Cirno's recklessness or the other fairies' childishness. Koakuma is often just 'thirsty for Patchy', but even that has been a jumping off point for more interesting ideas and goals for her. 10. Overall, which era(s) did you like/dislike the most? This may be because I am stuck there. But I quite like the PC-98 games. There's something exuberant in Zun's childhood ambitions. Something fun and exciting, even if he looks down on them now. The Windows Golden Age is also a safe bet. The series has grown much more complex than Touhou 6 for instance, but EoSD, PCB, IN, etc are remembered as classics for a reason. Least favorite? I'm not deep enough in the games to make a definitive statement. Though a lot of the spinoff games don't seem as compelling. Fairy Wars always sounded both very short and dull.
  10. Sigh. I've mentioned in the past I hate making longer entries in the GSG. Oh, I love writing them, but they seem to intimidate readers, or perhaps they just don't have the time to read my longer entries. Which is sad, since I am writing them for you as well as me. This week I had to bite the bullet though. Every time I tried to tighten the entry, it felt like it left at a boring point for the audience. I mean 'you are in an unfamiliar place, you see a lady with a house for a hat ahead of you. What do you do' isn't the best ending point. And her hurrying Oscar to bed was equally dull. Hopefully you all enjoy the entry regardless! I am hoping to start writing these twice a week as my life's chaos begins to fade. Hoping for shorter entries too from now on, meaning they will be faster, easier, and better for the audience to read.
  11. The Human Village Erroneous and simple name aside, the Human Village is the main settlement of humanity within Gensokyo. Lying along the Canal of Willows and encircled by the Forest of Magic, the Human Village is a walled Japanese style village of the late Meiji era. It is home to numerous sites of note, including the Hakurei Shrine just outside the village, Hieda Temple, Suzunaan book shop, numerous stores, and the only school in the region. It is largely inhabited by humans native to Gensokyo, though a sizable minority of humans from various Outside World countries may be found here as well. As a new arrival to the Human Village, you will have both distinct advantages and disadvantages over the natives. You will be both healthier and better educated than most natives. However, you will need to learn Japanese, as well as the dangers of living in Gensokyo, and most of your education and life experience will be of little help. The Heida Temple School offers free education for Outsiders, with the understanding you will integrate and assist the village. Opportunities to make money for Outsiders were typically few, however Otherworldly Ventures has invested in a number of facilities to assist in both housing and vocational training, in exchange for half your income and contract of service. Usually for five years. A few examples of Otherworldly Ventures storefronts include: Azuma no Pizza-ya Daiyousei Sharecropping Honengyo Fishery Perry Lumber Company A Normal Human Blacksmithy Bintara Clinic & Pharmacy =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Among the throngs of people lining the road, a figure moved among them. Drifting between the curious observers effortlessly. She had lived in this village far longer than most, and knew its superstitious inhabitants well. Which made her all the more leery of what lay beyond the wooden gate outside… For his part, Oscar rocked back and forth on his toes. His little trick had worked, but the line of eyes gazing down at him and the silence was beginning to unnerve him. The quiet was thankfully broken as the double doors swung open. He wasn’t sure what he had been expecting. But the woman in her blue dress and square hat definitely hadn’t been it. Despite her simple dress, the stern look she gave under her long white hair was enough to freeze the blood. A fact made doubly sure as Agappa crept behind him. Peering nervously around him. Yet again he was a barrier between two people… “Ah, good evening.” He said, his throat finally mustering the courage to speak. “I’m--” “Come with me, Outsider.” Her tone was curt, but she left the gate open as she turned. Which was more than enough for Oscar. The Magician followed after her. A fresh sense of relief washed over him as he passed under the gate. He had no idea where it was or how he came here. But for now, he was safe… =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The gate creaked audibly as it swung shut. Blocking out the nighttime sounds of the forest and securing the village once again. Three pairs of eyes gazed from the darkness. Kimiko’s voice cursing in the darkness. “We could have caught him just now. He had enough meat to feed us for the night.” “Shhh, patience little sister,” A creeping voice emerged from the dark behind her. Its tone was understanding, though the way it spoke was enough to make even the Maneater’s skin crawl. “We could have caught him, yes, but his screams would have drawn out the town’s exterminators, not to mention the little friends who so thoroughly bested you.” The soft touch of satin fingers against Kimiko’s cheek almost made her jump. Even as it tenderly brushed her hair behind one ear. Ripples of anger at the barb pulsed in her mind, but she knew not to react. Her oldest sister would see it as reason enough to humiliate her further. “It would be truly terrible if Agappa Haraume reporting to Eiki that a human was attacked by Maneaters, or the Gap Hag becoming aware of our presence so close to her pets. Even Ex-Rumia awakening would mean death for we true Youkai. No. We know the hole he has fled to. We will draw him out in time. Hariko will go into the town in the coming days, and fetch us something to eat. When suspicion is roused against him...then we strike.” The low mocking laughter of her eldest sister was joined by the giggles of the second eldest. Her arms and hair raised to the half-moon, sinister hooks glittering in the light. A promise of the feast to come. If only it would comfort Kimiko’s empty belly… =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The houses that passed were of simple make, Oscar noted. Scarcely larger than sheds, though the space inside was about the same as an apartment, he supposed. The figure ahead of him moved confidently through the streets. Ignoring the bystanders who watched with naked curiosity. Eventually they came to a simply but distinguished building of wood and clay, adjoining a much larger structure. Whether it was a mansion or a temple, he couldn’t tell in the low light. The woman slipped off her black shoes, the red bows looking unnecessarily large in the dark. Without a word he began to follow. “No shoes.” Agappa’s voice was low and monotone as ever. Glancing over his shoulder, he could see she had already pulled off her broken sandals. With a roll of the eyes, he pulled his worn wool socks free of his shoes before following the trail of light from a room down the hall. The space was sparsely furnished. A number of educational materials written in an unrecognized language sat in stacks or on posters on the wall. A telescope and astronomical display by an open window. To the right, sitting imperiously behind a desk was the stern face of the woman gatekeeper. “Please. Sit.” The words were more like a command than an invitation. Though Oscar was too tired to do more than silently oblige, taking a stool facing the desk. Agappa followed, careful to keep in his shadow. “Tea?” “Please.” He didn’t feel parched, but it had been at least half a day since he’d had anything to drink. If anything, he wished there was food too. But it was best not to press his host. A moment later, a steaming cup of green tea sat before him. One he happily took. Even as the stranger observed him coolly from the opposite side of the desk. “So tell me. Who are you, and what are you doing here?” =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= = “I am Oscar, though my friends call me Osu. They were trying to guide me here when we got separated.” = “I am Oscar Diggs, Magician Magnificent and Sorcerer beyond Compare. Didn’t you hear?” = “I’m sorry, we seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot. Would ah...Twenty dollars convince you to let me spend the night?” = “I’m sorry Miss, is this an interrogation? Because I’ve had enough threats for one day.” = “What an excellent question. I will be happy to answer it in the morning.”
  12. Technology is generally misunderstood in Gensokyo, in much the same way magic is on Earth. Gensokyo's natives follow lives of physical toil and union with nature. This simple—but not unsophisticated—lifestyle leads to them to underestimate the value and use of science. Items like cellphones sold for thousands on Earth are paperweights sold for a handful of Mon. With some creative use, you can use modern technology to deceive Human and Youkai alike. Though be exceptionally cautious, as few will indulge open acts of trickery. Electricity is a scarce resource in Gensokyo, and most technology will swiftly become useless. However any technology you have may be sold at the Kirisame-ya Trading Post, Kourindou or Otherworldly Curiosities for reasonable prices. We also provide recharging services for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, for 2 Shu per device, or 2 Bu per hour of use. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= “Come on. Let’s find a gate.” Exhaustion stung at Oscar’s feet. Though it was not so bad now, that he was so near his destination. Silently, Agappa-chan watched him go. Before following after him. Her sandals ringing out after him. The wall extended for a few dozen yards. Rounding a corner, Oscar couldn’t help but smile with satisfaction. Ahead was a wooden gate. Flanked by a pair of paper lanterns swaying in the evening breeze. The area looked unguarded, without so much as a watchman on the parapet overhead. That was fine. He had a way around it. Reaching into his pocket, he felt around for a moment before pulling out his cellphone. The device had only so much power. About 44%. There was no reception, but all he needed was the bluetooth feature. Scrolling over to the media player, he hummed to himself as he looked over his options. His music player was mostly filled with children's songs, often from movies. He would have liked to choose a self-aggrandizing song, but would the townsfolk react well to that... At his elbow Agappa-chan looked up at him with a blank expression of curiosity. Normally, her gaze would have creeped him out. This time, he couldn’t help but smile. This had to get a reaction from her. Turning on the ‘record’, button, he spoke with as powerful a voice as he could into the phone. “People of the Human Village! I am Oscar Diggs, the Great and Powerful! Magician Magnificent, and Sorcerer beyond compare! I am weary, and have journeyed far. Grant me the mercy of your shelter, and I shall reward you.” Finding the perfect option, he clicked on the song. Setting the timer to begin playing thirty seconds afterward. Easing the phone into his pocket, he instead reached into a pocket of his cloak. Pulling free a set of colorful balls. Yellow, red and blue all shone in the moonlight. First one ball, then two, three, and then eight. In any other circumstance, he might have felt stupid performing without an audience. But magic was all about presentation. As the balls bounced from one hand to another, music began to emanate from them. The low dulcet sound of the Blue Danube Waltz emerging from the bluetooth speakers inside. At the sound, Agappa started backwards in shock. Her already partially agape mouth falling open in her surprise. The small victory brought a smile to his face, even as he threw one of the spheres in his hand over the wall. Another followed, then another three. Each carrying the sound as they bounced and rolled along the cobbled streets or alongside thatched homes. Strange sounds in the night were not uncommon in folktales and warnings of the Youkai and Kami. Though they had little in common with the strange Western music playing just outside their windows. It was not long before the sounds drew out the townsfolk. First peeking from behind reed curtains, then stealing looks outside their doors, and as the orchestra built, finally stepping into the street. After all, there were no capering goblins or dread spirits in the street. Each ball continuing to bounce, as the orchestra played. Some children stared in wonder, while others played or danced. The sounds of surprise and wonder carrying over the wall. Oscar smiled. Sometimes he loved his job. But not as much as he would with his next trick. As the music turned low, each ball in the street transmitted his voice. The sounds of the village sounded more urgent now, and it was not long before faces appeared over the gatehouse, gazing down at the traveler and his companion. All that remained was to see who answered his demand… =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Who answers the gate? = A concerned school teacher in a blue dress and a very strange hat. = A historian who has never recorded anything quite like this. = A book-renter, who does not know what kind of magic this is. = A hopeful blacksmith, mesmerized by this strange display. = A friendly spirit, distracted from her duties serving drinks.
  13. According to experts, not reading the Gensokyo Survival Guide is linked with male pattern baldness.

  14. When you find a suitable place for a homestead, the Magic Forest will be your main source of lumber. All trees are not equal however; while maple and plum trees are common, cedar and cypress trees make for better shelter. It is safe to harvest younger trees, especially near the Human Village. But be wary. There are many signs to be aware of. Trees considered sacred are often marked with Shimenawa, and are to be avoided. Predatory trees can usually be identified during the day by their discolored leaves, the presence of drag-marks on the ground, or skeletons nearby. Some trees are home to sleeping Youkai or Fairies. While some mark these trees as their homes, others look completely innocuous. Any angry inhabitant of a given tree should be avoided, or may be dealt with using a number of items you can purchase from the Otherworldly Ventures Inc Catalog, in the Extermination section. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Knowing Agappa, she was in no hurry to introduce the two. And probably would not do the best job if she tried. It was best then to do it himself. With a flamboyant wave of his arms, the man’s cloak flared behind him. The red of the liner glittering off the light of the moon. With all the elegance his exhausted form could muster, he rolled his top hat from his head along his sleeve. Catching it in a white gloved hand as he bowed. Extending the hat towards her, even as a fluffy head emerged in protest. “Its a pleasure to meet you, young lady. I am Oscar Diggs the IVth. Magician Extraordinaire. Now, about a way out of this forest, could--” All the while during this display, Narumi simply watched in a bemused kind of shock. Even if the rabbit that emerged from the hat earned him a smile. But it was at the word ‘magician’ that a change swept over her. Narumi’s eyes widened in the dark, and she seemed to grow breathless. “You’re a magician too?!” The ‘too’ startled Oscar. Before he had a chance to collect himself, the girl lunged forward. Despite her petite size, he felt like he had been struck in the belly with a rock. A stark contrast to the small arms wrapped around his sides. “Oh this is wonderful! I’ve never met another Magician aside from Marisa and Alice before. They’ll be glad to meet you too!” Marisa. Alice. So there were other Magicians here? And they had normal-sounding names. Oscar was no expert in Asian names, but he doubted ‘Agappa’ or ‘Cirno’ were common back on Earth. Not to mention he met a boy...girl...named Wriggle that day. Perhaps this meant he was one step closer to normality. “O-oh, you do magic too then?” “I’m alive because of magic” Narumi rejoined. Petting the head of Oscar’s rabbit as it emerged. The aged thing’s white furry face seemed to grow less peeved, before finally surrendering to her gentle caresses. Eyes closing as he returned to sleep. “You must have some skill, if you can make a rabbit appear like that. Does he have a name?” She phrased things weirdly. That much was clear. But without Team 9 and Cirno’s optimism, Oscar felt it was a good idea to stay in this woman’s good graces. Best not confront her on things he didn’t need to. “His name’s Houdini.” “That’s an odd name for an Earth Rabbit. But he seems to have taken to it well.” Don’t poke. Don’t pester. Don’t pry. Just get out of this damn forest before something decides to eat you. For the third time today. “Yeah, uh, he’s a bit tired. I was trying to find my way to the Human Village with my friends. But we got separated.” “I can show you the way.” Her voice kept some of its composure, but it seemed breathless now. Her hands folded onto one another. Slowly breathing in as her calm returned. “Please. Follow me.” Turning, Narumi stood perfectly straight as she strolled into the trees. Oscar looked around for a moment. Before easing his hat onto his head and following. The sound of broken sandals behind him signaling Agappa following. For a time, the three were silent. The late night pressing in around them on all sides. Only the sound of nocturnal creatures kept them company. Once or twice, Oscar thought he could smell something cooking upon the wind, but it soon faded. They had been walking for some time, at least twenty minutes, when he could make out a shape through the trees. A squat wall of clay and wood, scarcely taller than he was. Even at this late hour, lights shone from lanterns along the perimeter. Narumi turned to him with a smile. Offering a bow as she did. “This is the Human Village, sir Oscar Diggs the IVth. I hope you visit the Forest of Magic again after you have a chance to rest. I would love to share a friendly Danmaku with you.” Narumi had been one of the friendliest sights Oscar had seen that day. But her farewell left him completely baffled. The obvious questions would have to wait for now though, as he was faced with a new challenge. As Narumi vanished back into the woods behind him, Oscar turned. And pondered the walls in front of him… =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= How do we get inside? = Let's find a gate. The gatekeeper's probably asleep, but maybe we can wake them with some 'magic'. = "Hey Agappa, let me show you what an Indian Rope Trick is." = Pick up Agappa and throw her over the walls. She can unlock them from the other side. = Climb a tree and see if you can cross a branch onto the wall.
  15. Our first post without Team 9 in a few months has dropped! Sorry its so late. I was hoping to have it up yesterday, but I lost track of the time and before I knew it, bedtime had snuck up on me. Narumi's a character I haven't reached yet in 2hu, so feel free to critique me on my portrayal of her. Even if her appearances are sparse, I'd like her to be accurate. One quick note. Normally, a tie between two options invalidates both as the next possible response. Though after reflecting on it, it feels a little like I am penalizing you guys for doing something you logically shouldn't be doing. So from now on, any ties won't disable either option. I've also been thinking of setting up some kind of stat system and inventory, so you can keep an eye on Oscar as he grows smarter and more capable over the story. Idk, what do you guys think?
  16. If you have cause to be in the Forest of Magic, never fear! Our handy Trail Guides are a small but elite group of Youkai and Kami who know the forest well. For a small fee, they will carefully escort you through the forest. For those seeking a less safe but more economic option, Otherworldly Ventures Inc has marked numerous trails in the Forest with ribbons of various colors. While these are used during daylight hours by residents of the Village, be warry. While few Youkai in this era are man-eaters, more than a few will happily mislead you by rearranging these ribbons. Either in hopes of extorting something from you, or simply as a practical joke. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= His return to loneliness was unwelcome, to put it mildly. Oscar still didn’t know Team 9 well, but they had been nothing but nice to him. Excluding Wriggle’s temper or Rumia’s hunger. They had been better friends to him than any he had back on Earth. For awhile, he had even felt welcome in their company. Now, as quickly as he found them, he was alone again. The sounds around him were familiar, but unwelcome. The chirp of crickets, the calls of owls, and the low cry of other nocturnal animals. Each unseen in the forest, illuminated by only the stars and the odd firefly. And each a reminder of how lost he really was. Well. He wasn’t completely alone at least. “Uh, Agappa,” He managed, one hand rising to his hat. Cirno’s warning was still fresh in his mind about her. But it wasn’t like Agappa would want to be lost out here either. At his voice, her hood turned visibly in the dark. Swiveling slowly, even as her eyes blinked quickly. After a couple of scans, her eyes settled on a knothole on the tree next to him. Her expression did not change. “Yes, Ningen?” “Again with the Ningen...So, you know the way out of this place, right?” The question earned him another few blinks. Her head swiveled, the yellow hood standing out well in the dark. After circling in place, her hands reached back for her eyes and-- “Actually, nevermind.” The last thing he wanted was to hear her taking her eyes out again. Agappa’s hands thankfully lowered, even as she turned to a shrub on his right. “Do you really have to do that?” “Eyes don’t see false things well.” “False things?” “Yes.” “What are false things?” “Lies.” “What do you see well then?” “True things.” The conversation didn’t seem to be progressing in a positive direction. Oscar simply nodded politely. Something her brown eyes seemed to miss as she continued staring at the shrub beside him. With a sigh, the young magician turned back to weighing his options, when he looked down at his sleeves. His ‘magic’ rockets were still in place along his arm. And while he had spent one volley while scaring Rumia, he still had a second volley. That wouldn’t be necessary for help, a single flare would do. All he had to do was light it. That came with risks of course. Who knew what lurked in the forest waiting to eat him, or worse? But its not like he was at any less a risk just standing here. It took a few moments to fiddle with the ignition. The flares were meant to fire at once, not one at a time. But after some work, he managed to undo the wires to the rest of the contraption. Raising one hand, he pressed the trigger. A single red rocket surged into the night. Letting out a low scream as it flew to the sky and burst. The thunderous clap surely catching the attention of anyone in a mile. As the light burst, he thought he could see something looming in the background of the forest. Shadows melded to form a body and face, which leaned back among the trees as though to hide from sight. Oscar peered into the trees as the light faded, unsure what he had seen. If only he had another look… The crunch of the undergrowth to his right brought him spinning around. Knowing Team 9 all preferred flying, he expected to see a wild animal, or maybe another hostile Youkai. Instead, his green eyes took in a pale, anxious face beneath a bowl-like hat. Nervously scuttling backwards, putting a tree between he and her. Before peering around it. She resembled Agappa, if only just a little. Though the hesitation in her face showed much more emotion than Agappa’s calm stoicism. “Ah...g-good evening Agappa. I see you found your Outsider.” “Naruko.” “Its Narumi, actually…” =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= = "The fairies were petrified of Agappa, but you seem like you're friends." = "Its a pleasure to meet you, young lady. I am Oscar Diggs IVth, Magician Extraordinaire. Now, about a way out of this forest..." = Agappa probably won't be the best pointman in this conversation. Maybe endear Narumi with a magic trick. = "...You were looking for me Agappa?" = Run back along the way you came. Maybe you can take one of the other pathes.
  17. I can't wait to see what you all decide. :) Bear in mind as you all choose, there is no true wrong answer. Flirting with deadly consequences may have bad results, but I won't end you out of nowhere. While some decisions lead to less interesting paths, simultaneously some lead in unexpected directions and to sudden twists. Each is open to you, and anything I think is especially interesting you missed I may simply use later in the game. So, don't think you are gatekeeping yourselves from something interesting by making the choice you think is best instead of the exciting option.
  18. Surviving in the Gensokyo wilderness is normally just a matter of triangulating your position using Youkai Mountain. But the Magic Forest makes such things difficult. The trees are thick, and the sky grows dark unusually quickly when night approaches. If night falls while in the Magic Forest, you should avoid anything which looks strange. While dangerous Youkai or Ghosts are rare, there are a number of carnivorous plants or hallucinogenic mushrooms which might be a threat to you. If in doubt, pull a leaf from a safe distance. This will normally prompt any plant to attack, and its texture gives away its true nature. If it does not react, climb the tree and spend the night in its branches. Even here, you may not be safe. Some vines drink human blood, while other trees are inhabited by groups of Fairies, who sleep at night. While their haphazard structures are usually recognizable, they can be annoying at best and dangerous at worst when offended. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The argument that followed was as brief as it was hard to follow. Team 9’s exchanges were hard to follow at the best of times. But worn down as he was, their words were more difficult than ever before. Agappa silently standing behind him hardly helped his concentration. In the end, Wriggle and the fairies split up to find Rumia. While Mystia would lead Oscar to a safe place to rest. “R-really, its not far…” Mystia managed over one shoulder. The tremor in her voice was audible. Though why, Oscar could only guess. Was it over her worries for Rumia? Concern for him and his feelings? Or was it the silent figure in her raincoat following behind? His answer came as Mystia spun in place, looking back at Agappa. “Are you sure you’d rather not go with Cirno? She’s...done a lot more things worth punishing than me. Aha...ha...” The nervous awkward laughter died as Agappa stared mutely back. Jaw slightly slack as she gazed at Mystia. Enough was present in her gaze to tell Oscar she knew something. The Night Sparrow’s nerves fortunately seemed to fade as her eyes went to him. The two were hardly more than acquaintances. But something in him seemed to spark her sympathy. If only just a little. “Don’t be mad at Rumia, Osu. She’s just hungry. When we get to the Barbecue Pit, you can rest.” “The…” The magician blinked. The gears of his mind beginning to turn after so long focused on the pain in his feet. “The what now?” “Oh! The Barbecue Pit. I cook for other Youkai there sometimes. Barbecue is a Human thing. I don’t fully understand it, but it makes tasty food!” Fresh enthusiasm crept into her voice now that they were talking about something she knew. And not the creeping raincoat behind them. Oscar’s body followed after her with sudden animation. Jostling his hat, and earning a sidelong glare from a head that peeked its way from inside. “Mystia, could you barbecue something now?” “I...suppose? There’s not a lot of meat, but--” Oscar couldn’t be sure if it was the intent in his gaze, or her saying the word ‘meat’ which caught her attention. But even in the dark, her brown eyes widened with realization. “Y-you’re right! Hurry Osu!” With a sudden surge of energy, the Sparrow silently wound her way through the trees. Vanishing into the dark trees that surrounded them. At first Oscar tried to keep pace, the rapid footfalls of Agappa close behind. But it did not take long for him to lose all sight of Mystia. He was now hopelessly lost. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= What now? = You had a passing interest in astronomy. Maybe using that, you can orient yourself and find the village? = "Hey Agappa...do you have any idea how to get out of here?" = Fire a flare. You have enough for one last show of 'magic'. = Try to follow after Mystia, singing her song (poorly) to keep Youkai from attacking. = Climb a tree. We'll be safe there until morning. Or at least until Mystia comes back.
  19. I'm glad to hear it. Tbh, while I have some preferences for which is picked this week, Oscar probably will be separated for at least one post, to give an idea of how scary the forest might be off the trail. While most of the Forest's threats outside the petty Youkai are pretty vague in descriptions, adding some color to some of its lesser known threats will be fun and useful. I'll be honest, today's post is probably the worst of the ones I made. I don't really have an excuse; I was sick this weekend, sure, but I set my own deadlines for this. I think I emphasized Rumia's isolation decently, but it does kind of come out of nowhere. I put some hints, but they're so separated its hard to follow. And her injuries are only referred to now and then prior. Maybe I am just too worried about keeping everyone's attention. Its not that I think you'll all dip if a post is late or I'm only doing this for reacts, but your enjoyment does mean a lot to me. If I can encourage you on your first day of the week during a bathroom break or a bus trip, I want to do it. We'll have to wait and see. :) I won't go too deep into what Rumia's going through, but I am taking influence from fanon lore. In direct fandom lore, Rumia's rather light, and even in Team 9 she's a background character. Have some ideas for her and Daiyousei in future for a later plot. But this will hopefully set the stage for that, and Oscar's reaction to her hurt may well dictate their development. There's potential for a fun misunderstanding at the BBQ spot. Imagine you're sleeping and you feel a bone. At a pit where the monsters you know eat people, make BBQ. Now imagine you are a shopkeeper. You don't really like humans, but you've softened on them and you just made friends with one. And you've definitely never eaten one (recently). You're awakened to screams as your new friend is running off in the dark.
  20. It seems my opinions have caused some controversy. Joking aside. I don't know, a lot of my view of the Forest is with questionable context. Most inhabitants we regularly see are fairies, and its usually a starting zone. Fairies are so comparatively weak, that the average fairy is only somewhat of a threat to an average human, and considered more of a pest. There's also the issue that the perception we have of Gensokyo comes mostly from its heroines. Heroines who fight gods, demons and monsters. Not exactly the best source of information for the average farmer. That was part of the reason I wanted to write the GSG from the perspective of a human with no powers. So threats Marisa and Reimu would just gloss over would still have teeth. I will definitely concede the forest is dangerous. I never intended to say it was a safe place to be. But if the forest is considered 'very dangerous', and every other zone aside from the Misty Lake and Human Village are considered more dangerous, I think it undersells the Forest's threats. Particularly given what we see of it in game. I may have that somewhere, though I haven't read it. Books that old are a good source of Youkai. Most library books I read as a kid on Youkai come from the 70s to 80s, and were very rudimentary. You know its a normie book on Japan when they describe Nekomata as anime catgirls instead of 100 year old felines blessed with magic powers. It wouldn't exactly be beyond me. I loved fairy lore as a kid, and Youkai later, and the two have more than a few similarities if you examine them from their roots. But I like the idea of the readers learning about obscure Japanese monsters as they read. The sheer number of Youkai also make creating a wholly original one difficult. That image that inspired Agappa? I found that before I decided on her status as a Youkai. There was just a Youkai who loved wearing old raincoats and carried burning things in its mouth already. Do have a few original fairies I thought I might use in a future project connected to Oscar, but we'll see. :)
  21. That's an unorthodox question, and for many different reasons. :) Thinking over your answer, I had a number of different thoughts. But after considering things, I think it would be best to start with one of the 98 cast. They've so little attention, and are vague enough I think it lends room for a redesign. My pick would be Orange. She's a very weak Youkai, with a decently sized fan following, and is possibly the weakest starting boss. Which gives you a lot to do with her, whether its recasting her as a heroic knight or a Monkey King style figure, or just a shy, easily frightened dude.
  22. The Magic Forest It has no name, because it does not need one. There are other groups of trees, but beyond Muenzuka, there is only one real forest. The Magic Forest’s inhabitants are mostly fairies, with a number of Youkai and minor Kami. During the day, the forest is relatively harmless. Most fairies being easily repelled or distracted. By night, the forest grows more dangerous as the Youkai awake. The Youkai of the forest, while not especially strong, have a close bond with one another, and readily come to one another’s aid. The forest also has a number of flora, making it dangerous at all hours. Hallucinogenic mushrooms, carnivorous trees and blood-sucking vines among the many hazards of this place. If you become lost in the forest, there is a chance you can get the attention of some of its human inhabitants. The witch Kirisame Marisa and occultist Alice Margatroid shelter lost wanderers, while Narumi Yatadera and Rinnosuke Morichika will guide lost souls. Be careful that by calling for help however, you do not attract the attention of its more dangerous inhabitants… Or, you can purchase our Lorelei of the Night branded music boxes, available at every Otherworldly Ventures outlet for 1 Bu. Tired of going out at night and being attacked by Youkai? Ease your life, with Lorelei of the Night. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Oscar’s feet hurt. The pain pulsed in his shoes as he trudged along. Envying the others who were carelessly floating ahead of him. Only Agappa walked by foot. Her sandals with their broken thong making a peculiar sound behind him. Fortunately, he did not have long to focus on his feet. From in front of him, the most beautiful sound he had heard echoed from between the trees. A song more akin to a celestial instrument than human song. It took him a moment to realize it was coming from Mystia. Weaving her way between the darkened trunks effortlessly. Though the evening sky had dimmed and darkness set in, she didn’t seem to have her eyes open. From the dark, sinister gazes seemed to rise among the trees as Mystia’s song passed. Glowering down at him before disappearing. Every color was represented, from red to blue to brown. Now and then, a face would materialize from the dark, making him jump. Before it would smile and wave to the group of girls. Each time Mystia would wave back, greeting it by name. The others of Team 9 echoing her greeting enthusiastically. But usually, the eyes would simply vanish into the undergrowth. As they walked along the dirt path, the others eased ahead, eager to see another familiar face. Agappa on the other hand hung back. Not wanting another awkward meeting with a judgmental group. The only one who remained close to him was Rumia. Her head still wrapped in Daiyousei’s kerchief, stained with blood. Her face and arms flecked with soot and burns from his rockets. Even her eyes seemed swollen. Her head was turned down, ignoring the greetings from elsewhere. Don’t talk to her. She tried to eat you. She chased you after trying to eat you. She’s only your friend because her other friends like her… “Hey Rumia.” The words startled her, though she didn’t jolt at them. Her head raised slowly. Not looking back at him. “...You ah, had a rough day. How are you feeling?” “Hungry…” The sorrow in her voice might have moved him. If he wasn’t half sure he was on the menu. But there was something else in her voice. Something more than hunger pangs. Behind him, he was sure he could hear Agappa muttering to herself. What it was, he couldn't tell over the song. “Don’t your injuries hurt?” “They’ll heal at night.” The despondency in her voice only grew. Either they really hurt, or she was really playing up the act. Still, was she really dangerous with her friends nearby? “Do you want me to carry you?” “Go away.” Her body darkened and faded. A shadowy ball enveloping her a moment before she veered off into the forest. Vanishing among the trees, despite the odd bump into a trunk. The song ahead slowed. Four trusting faces looking back with concern. Cirno spoke first. "Osu, where's Rumia?" =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= What now? = You have a little time. She can’t see, and is probably in pain. Trick her into coming back to the path. = This seems like the perfect occasion for a long-range flare--erm, firebolt. That'll scare her back. = Sneak after her. She'll never see you coming. = Chase after her! = She’ll go to a familiar place to rest and be alone. The BBQ pit! We can make camp there.
  23. Hello! Welcome to the Moriya Shrine! We're happy to have you. I hope you make many friends while you are here. There are a lot of effective Grass type Pokémon. Though most trainer teams don't use Pokémon based on their power, but as extensions of their personality. If you don't have a level cap in mind for the two, that's fine. I'll cover a wider range of options. Now, I haven't reached the Aki sisters in my own Touhou journey. So this will be a lot of generalizations off the Wiki. My apologies for my casual Touhou fanisms. Seedot makes sense, given its based off of acorns, which fall in the early...fall. It evolves into Nuzleaf at Lv. 14, and then into Shiftry when exposed to a leaf stone, though Shiftry gives strong Tengu vibes which might conflict with their natures. But if they appear early on, both Seedot and Nuzleaf are good picks. Hoppip and its evolutions Skiploom and Jumpluff are also options. Being based off dandelions, they aren't the most thematic, but fall wouldn't be fall without the odd dandelion seed floating by. Not the strongest of options, but good filler options. Cottonee and Whimiscott are also options. Cotton, while not normally thought of as a harvest crop, is incredibly important to humans. Their fairy duality also gives them access to some fun abilities. The Applin line is also a handy form to look into. While one of Pokémon's goofier lines, apples are very thematic of autumn, and they have a wide range. There's Applin of course if you need a weak filler. Then there's Flapple, Dipplelin, Hydrapple and Appletun, who all are nature-dragon types, which makes it both rare and fairly powerful, and they're all one of the few Pokémon capable of Dynamaxing. It has a wide range of moves, including Dragon, Fire, Steel, Fighting and Rock. A good surprise when the player thinks they've won. Lotads also fit, along with their evolutions Lombre and Ludicolo. Lilypads usually bloom earlier in the year but can bloom up to fall. It would also give you access to water moves, to throw off lazy players who try to solo with a fire type. That's it for grass types. Though you can also pad them out with insect types, if you feel they need them. Kricketot and Kricketune for instance, crickets are active up to the mid autumn. Volbeat, Illumise, Shedninja and Ninjask are also options, but pushing it a bit, often returning to hibernation in August. All in all, while specifically autumn-themed Pokémon are difficult, you do have a few options to consider. I hope this will help! P.S. Clicked the song link. Was pleasantly surprised and just a little disappointed that it was not a RickRoll.
  24. I try to keep the lore pretty accurate to the original Youkai. Of course, I take a few liberties to account for Touhouisms. The Mikari Baba for instance is canonically a hideous old crone, with one eye and carrying a burning rope in their mouth, wearing straw rain coats. This on the other hand, is the image that inspired Agappa-Chan. She was made younger and given a yellow raincoat to make her more cute. But I try to make any original Youkai true to the spirit of Touhou, and its Animification Beam. Some choices I make are more for fun, but are rooted in Youkai lore. Its a fun way to characterize, and humanize them in a similar way to Kogasa's humanoid form. Their personalities on the other hand are fairly rooted in the original lore. Even if the Hitotsume Kozo are themed for the Three Stooges. I've a long interest in folklore, whether American, European or Asian. Youkai were an interest, even if older books tend to only have really famous youkai. Wikipedia is an option, if you skip the article and go to the citations. But yokai.com is the best resource I ever found. (Side note, Touhou resources tend to use 'Youkai', though the more accepted Western transcription is 'Yokai'). As for my knowledge of the series, I'm definitely a casual fan as far as the games go. Gri would kick my ass any day of the week. My introduction to the series was actually through fan games, even if I had distant contact with the series since the 2000s. I found a Touhou mod for Mount and Blade, and that led me to the Wiki. I talk about the lore with people from the site and read/watch lore info dumps. My goal is to show a scene to a diehard fan and have them nod and go 'Yeah, my favorite part of Touhou's just like that'. I'm not sure OoCs would be welcome in fan works, and I think Misty Lake is a better place for my rambling replies. But I can tag you if it helps @kymoh. I was hoping to surprise you guys with a reply already. But tomorrow I'll be a busy man. Hoping to have something for you all early though. Looks like the viewers have voted for the Youkai Trail. That'll be a fun and laid back trip. Possibly giving us a glimpse at other youkai, and let Mystia and Rumia talk a little before they reach the Human Village. They'll arrive late, and Oscar may be so tired a random event may happen...And some events will have a chance to happen later, like Cirno talking Oscar into helping her waste the Three Fai--I mean visiting the Radio Tower. Ironically, from what I can tell despite the Magic Forest being described as a very dangerous place, its pretty harmless compared to elsewhere. Sure, it has toxic mushrooms, monsters, youkai etc. But is it really worse than Youkai Mountain? Muenzuka? The Netherworld has ghosts which can kill you just by touch. And there aren't multiple protagonists who live in screaming distance. So, we have options for things going wrong for Oscar, but they won't be so bad...probably.
  25. Road of Reconsideration This path winds from the human lands into Muenzuka. Lined by the familiar red Spider Lilies, the Road is said to be used by humans seeking an end to their own lives. Because of this, any number of Ghosts and Youkai are found here. Its bad reputation seldom deters treasure hunters, Youkai and Human alike, who scavenge the edge of the forest for relics from neighboring realms. Earth relics are most common, though treasures from Makai have been found here as well. It is said the road terminates at the Sanzu, where the Shinigami ferry lost souls for judgment. If you value your life, dread this road. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= “I keep on hearing about these ‘Yamas’...what are they? How do they even know you’re misbehaving?” The question seemed even more unwelcome than his previous one. The hairs on the back of each girl’s head seemed to rise. Even Daiyousei was suddenly evasive. No one wanted to speak. No one wanted to make eye contact. Oscar was just thinking of rephrasing the question, when Agappa suddenly spoke at his elbow. The low even voice making the others speed just a little faster. “Yama. Judges, ten. They decide what happens to you after you die. Boring clouds, unhappy hole, sad trees or retry. Lady Eiki Shinki decides for everyone in Gensokyo.” With her curt proclamation done, Agappa grew quiet again. The collection of Youkai and Fairies ahead of him walking briskly and silently. Around them, Oscar could see the terrain was shifting. He had not seen a spider lily in an hour, and the trees lining the road were thinning. Giving way to rough, rolling hills. Nearby was another forest, its leaves unusually rich and dark, and with few blossoms in its boughs. On the horizon was the mountain, a lake at its base reflecting the twilight skies. Cirno put her hands on her hips, smiling blithely as she pointed. Squinting, he could see a circle of trees, surrounding a set of wooden structures. The first sign of civilization he had seen that day made his heart catch in his throat. “See that Osu? The Human Village is just there! They won’t let us in because we aren’t humans, but we go in when we feel like it.” “How?” “Ancient Fairy secret.” The blue haired brat said, with a cheeky smile. Daiyousei turned with a gentle smile of her own. “Come on. If we hurry, you’ll be inside before midnight.” “But...we have to go through that forest, right?” “Its nothing to worry about,” Cirno said confidently. A diminutive hand rising to rest on Mystia’s shoulder. “You have the best trail guide in all of Gensokyo.” Oscar felt Cirno’s judgment, even on something so simple, was questionable. But the warmth in her voice showed her sincerity. At her side, the winged Youkai returned the fairy’s smile with one of her own. “Just you follow me, Osu! There’s nothing a human should be afraid of at night in the Magic Forest, which isn’t a Youkai like me!” Her words were somehow less reassuring than he’d hoped. And only grew all the more concerning as Mystia laid out the paths through the forest ahead… =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= = Lorelei leads the group along the Youkai Trail, singing a calming song as she goes. (Long, Friendly) = If we take the Magician’s Trail, we can reach Marisa’s and ask to spend the night! (Longer, Risky, but we can rest for the night) = If we follow the Radio Tower Trail, we can get one over on the Fairies of Ligh--I mean get some fairies to help us! (Short, Unfriendly) = Force march along the Village Trail as fast as possible. Osu can rest at the Village! (Short, Unpredictable) = A human, go that far in a couple hours? Very funny. Let’s make a camp where Mystia makes her BBQs! (Long, Safe)
