The age old question: how do I get my friends to be interested in Touhou? I've been without irl Touhou friends for too long now and I've decided it's finally time I at least tried to manually convince people. I'm sure I've read about other people introducing their friends to Touhou. How do you guys do it???

What is your favourite game outside of the touhou series
buskerdog replied to ScarletCyro's topic in Misty Lake
I love Metroidvanias. I have several friends who already love Hollow Knight. I know I would love Hollow Knight. But, I just have too many other things keeping me occupied at the moment. Celeste was also on my watchlist of switch games to get, but I never got around to buying it. Sigh... one day I will find time to play all these cool games... -
What is your favourite game outside of the touhou series
buskerdog replied to ScarletCyro's topic in Misty Lake
Damn this thread got way more activity then I expected in very little time. Guess I have no choice but to appear myself. It has been said on this forum before. It will be no surprise to anyone who knows me. Anyone who's followed my forum posts will see it coming from a mile off. Deep breath in I like Monster Hunter. Deep breath out I still haven't played the Sunbreak expansion for Monster Hunter Rise yet. I don't have the time. This seems to have become a Pokemon discussion so I'll drop my two cents too. I used to be a big fan myself, in fact it was the first video game I ever played, so it's been with me for a long time. However for several years now I've not been happy with the direction the series is going, so I stopped following it. Most of my attachment is gone now, although my friends who also grew up with it remain more enthused than I am. Oh well. I have Touhou now. Touhou basically replaced it. -
Recently, I found myself revisiting an animation channel I once watched before my Touhou days began. One of their videos uses Bad Apple!!, which is how I was originally exposed to the song. However, the video only contains small parts of Bad Apple, as it is an unfinished animation parody of the famous shadow art video. What I did not realise, which I only noticed now by looking in the video's description, is that the version of Bad Apple contained in the video is in fact not the Alstroemeria Records arrange, but a different cover of it. So, I present to you: the first version of Bad Apple I ever heard - Draw the Emotional's version - now in full. And in light of my recent Kosuzu Motoori art I shared in Creative Works thread, I also have an arrangement of her theme to bring to light. The song is called Fantastic Girl Story, and it's by, errrr, certain circle that likes to strike down their works from Youtube. Hopefully this one stays up, at least for now...

Yeah Cave is a pretty esteemed developer of bullet hells. I heard about them working on a Touhou mobile bullet hell back when it was first announced but forgot about it so thanks for the reminder. Hopefully the game comes out on time and is a well received experience, although I doubt I'm going to play myself as I'm not someone who plays mobile games.

I didn't want to leave you with an incomplete list, but since you've impressed me by managing to find some of the ones I didn't know, I'll tell you the other names I had happened to come across. Odibatorasu: Gigantic Castle of Vicious Sand - Odibatorasu Shantien: phase 1: The Azure Dragon's Advent phase 2: The Azure Dragon Soars to the Heavens phase 3: Storm Preceding the Verge of Death phase 4: Imperial Wrath of the Azure Dragon (idk about the website music) I didn't have the Kuarusepusu / Highlands area theme name before, but did some digging and was able to run into it quite luckily here Kuarusepusu / Highlands: Sanctuary in the Sky - Highlands Can't believe we actually managed to find all of that...

It's been too long since my last Monster Hunter feature, since for a long time I've been wanting to mention the soundtrack of Monster Hunter Frontier - which can be described as the "dark pegasus horse" of MH games. But first, to understand that - what is Monster Hunter Frontier? Frontier was essentially an MMO version of Monster Hunter that never made it over to western audiences - emphasis on the word "was" because although it had a long run, the online service was shut down in 2019, making the game now impossible to play except through private servers. It was developed by a different team to the usual MH games and differentiates itself from mainline Monster Hunter in a lot of ways - although it essentially just started out as "online Monster Hunter with some unique monsters", there was always something a little bit "extra" about the game, even by MH standards; and being a continually supported online service there had to be something to keep people interested in the game, leading to an extreme amount of power scaling for both players and enemies over time and culminating in progressively more and more outlandish monster (and weapon) designs. Seriously, MH has always been a little OTT but Frontier is just something else. Some monsters have a lot of fans who want to see them brought over to the main series, although most fans also agree that not every monster from the game would be suitable for mainline MH. Still, there are actually two monsters in mainline MH who did originate from Frontier, however they were brought over a long time ago, and Capcom seems to ignore the existence of the game outside of this... ...until now. With the latest trailer for Sunbreak finally confirming a new monster from that game becoming canon, and confirming the fact Capcom remembers the game exists, it's reminded me that I finally ought to show some of the music from this game. The game's music is stylistically a bit different to typical Monster Hunter, which leads me to believe that not only the programming team but also the music team was different for this game. While the soundtrack is still orchestral, Frontier's tracks tend to have a more cinematic grandeur to them. This is also the point where Ken becomes very glad he doesn't list expansions separately from the base game in his end-of-year roundup, because being an MMO, Frontier has countless expansions that are probably impossible to understand unless you actually played the game. Also, I know I said I would get the track names but this a game that never left Asia and isn't even playable anymore we're talking about. Just don't even bother.

Need even more awesome music to listen to in the middle of Remix Tournament? Well no worries, because I have a handful of things I just gotta share... why do I always suddenly have stuff a bunch I things I want to post when there's a remix tournament on??

I've got some interesting fan trivia for you guys today. This MIDI arrange is believed to be the first recorded Touhou music fanwork. (I highly recommend reading the video description).

Due to some reminiscing over Stone McKnuckle in the Musical Discoveries thread recently, here are some of his MMX remixes!
-
WAIT WHAAAAAAAAAAAT??? STONE MCKNUCKLE HAS TOUHOU STUFF??????? I was literally re-listening to his Mega Man X remixes yesterday and was like "I wonder if he has Touhou stuff" had a look on the channel page and COMPLETELY MISSED THESE. Also, Stone McKnuckle is quite a throwback for me, was listening to his MMX stuff like Spark Mandrill Remix long before I became learned in Touhou. In fact, I must have first listened to him around the same time I was listening to DJ the S, where I was inavertedly exposed to Touhou.

What other series do you like?
buskerdog replied to CountVonNumenor's topic in All You Can Ask Buffet
OK, this has been long overdue, time to get stuck into this. So, what other series do I like, eh? As far as fandoms go Touhou is absolutely the one I am most involved in, but of course I have many other interests as well, mainly in video games. It has been said before on this forum that I am a fan of Monster Hunter, so let's start there. While I haven't played many games spanning across the whole series, it still holds a place as one of my favourites of all time. I have my friend to thank for introducing me to this series, who convinced me to try the demo of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on the 3DS. And ho boy, let me tell you that demo alone is absolutely gripping. Monster Hunter is often considered a difficult game to get into, everything from controls, to difficulty, to understanding systems, it's an action RPG game with a lot of complexity and gameplay that doesn't go easy on you, but when it clicks, it clicks, and as someone who enjoys a good challenge, it didn't take long for it to click with me. It's basically "boss fights, the game". So now I'm hooked on this demo, but wait - there's a new MH game coming out! The demo for that game comes out ahead of release, so I now have even more demo content to get me hyped up before the release, and so my journey is set to begin with Monster Hunter Generations. In retrospect, going with Monster Hunter 4 would honestly have been the better decision since that game is held in high regard for many reasons, but it didn't matter at the time, as I enjoy the crap out of MHGen anyway, and my friend gets it too so we can play multiplayer, an aspect which makes MH even better. I've since continued my journey with Generations Ultimate, Rise, and soon I'll have Rise's expansion to look forward to, Sunbreak. I've been on this paragraph for way too long now so I'll wrap things up, but one of the things I also love about MH is something I like in common with Touhou and that's the community, even if I'm not involved with it the MH community are the one of the most helpful and welcoming groups out there. So what else can I talk about? Well, this is less known about me, but I'm also quite into the Warcraft universe (however I should add a disclaimer here, that Blizzard is a shitty company and I'm aware of it). I used to play World of Warcraft for a time, although I wasn't super integrated into the whole multiplayer aspect and grinding endgame dungeons with a guild and such, I just spent time exploring the overworld to level up my character, occasionally joining up with a friend who also played at the time. I don't play anymore because it's bloody expensive, not helped by the fact that it's a huge timesink, fans aren't happy with the current direction of the game, and the fact the gameplay loop of WoW is just kind of boring, yet strangely addicting... however, there is another side of Warcraft that I can still enjoy, and that is Hearthstone. On the offchance you don't know, Hearthstone is free to play spin-off game of Warcraft where you collect cards and build a deck to verse other players. If you're looking for a well balanced, engaging strategic card game, that's... not what Hearthstone is. Hearthstone is random, chaotic, wacky, unpredictable, and most certainly not balanced - but you just have to understand that's part of the appeal. Also, collecting cards is enjoyable, and although you can spend money on the game, free to play is doable and very appreciated for a TCG. Seriously, I also used to collect and play cards for the Pokemon TCG. SO EXPENSIVE. The fact Hearthstone is a TCG I can play for free makes me come back to it, and as mentioned, the craziness that can ensue under the right conditions might seem unfair to some, but it's inherently what makes the game entertaining. There are many other video games I've played, for example I'm a fan of metroidvania stuff, but I'll leave it at that, since I'm not about to make this into a fat list of everything I've ever played. What is worth an extra paragraph though is tabletop games! As you may have picked up on by now through my mention of Hearthstone and Pokemon TCG, I am a fan of card games and indeed board games. I own a few myself, but of course I have a friend group to play with as well, and it's by pooling our different games together that we get to experience a wide variety of fantastic board games... OK it's mostly just one guy who has all the stuff, but I digress. Cool strategic board and/or card games that you can play 1 on 1 and/or in a group that come from niche indie board game makers are absolutely my jam... so, speaking of jam, makes you wonder why I recently created a card game for that game jam, hmmmm? -
I haven't been keeping on top of everything posted here lately, so I've had some catching up to do. This has not been a disappointing catching-up session.

YOOOO I FOUND A SOUND HOLIC RECENT DRAGON'S VEIL -光龍- This is also just a really good Immemorial Marketeers arrange in general.

Cool interesting genre fusion for Maiden's Capriccio! Unfortunately, I'm not sure if the track has a proper title...

I upload fangames from the game jams I do on itch.io, if you didn't already know. I also have a twitter and a Youtube, but they're both dead. Well the twitter technically isn't dead but I only use it to spread my gamedev stuff. I should make a "proper" post on this thread about the actual topic, but that'll have to come later... -
Does your country have a Touhou community?
buskerdog replied to CountVonNumenor's topic in Misty Lake
Eyyy, fellow UK fan! As for my experience with Touhou fans in England, I don't know any people personally in my country who are Touhou fans, but occasionally at anime/JP-related events I've seen a Touhou cosplayer or 2. That doesn't happen often, though. There are also Touhou fans I've seen on the internet who are from UK, so there's that as well. I don't know if I'd say my country has a Touhou "community", but knowledge of the series at least seems to be out there. I actually happened to find a Touhou UK & Ireland fan server recently. Not much really happens there, but I guess the fact it at least exists means something.
