  1. Another thing that many fans do not see is that except official works there are also officially approved works. Official works is everything made by ZUN himself what is considered to be official. Officially approved works are the works that were officially allowed by ZUN to be made (for example works by companies, otherwise they are violating the guideline) and got official licence. The key point here here is that approval is required according to the rules.

Everything else, what is not official or officially approved, are derivative works. They can be made as long they are within the rules. The only complicated part here are official works in which some parts were not made by ZUN (for example art in official manga). These works are official, the parts not by ZUN are also official (if they are considered official (for example most manga in BAiJR is unofficial, but BAiJR is official work)), but as ZUN gives a fair amount of freedom (with some supervision) for creators, the parts which were not specified by ZUN (for example characters' designs and their height) may be considered as officially allowed (so most calculations about heights of characters (and sizes of objects) in manga does not make much sense, I am sorry Lotus Eaters translators).

What are actual difference between officially approved and derivative works? If we will ignore things like financial resources and requirement of approval and we will not place officially approved works higher or lower than derivative works then there are no difference between them. Officially approved works have more resources (because they are made by companies) and they require approval by ZUN, while derivative works do not need this. All officially approved works have licence by ZUN, while derivative works don't need it, but some of them may get licence too (for example if they are published in official magazines).
Official works are separated from officially approved and derivative works.

So not everything that has licence is official, and officially approvedofficial.

Some Japanese discussion about that (Google translated):

  2. Hello. I want to share some thoughts I have after observing Japanese Touhou community for some time. I see that a lot of non-Japanese fans do not see some things the same way as Japanese fans see it. So, I think it is important to share such notices to reduce the amount of misunderstandings.

It is important to understand that a lot of Japanese people (and ZUN) understand Copyright and respect not in the same way Western people see it, and there are a lot of misunderstandings because of that (and there may be problems because of that). That leads to a big number of unspoken rules (except official guideline) which most Japanese fans understand, but Western fans do not know about them. Examples:
    1. Raising money before work's release (for example crowdfunding) is still a no-no in doujin sphere even now. It somewhat changed after COVID (because some doujin circles and even doujin events realized that they need to find a way to survive), so it is not that big no-no now. What about Touhou? In 2014 and 2015 there were 2 attempts to make fan content with crowdfunding. What important to note that many Japanese fans weren't supporting them (especially after ZUN's interview in 2014 (after first attempt) and Ruw's comments in 2015 (during the second one)). For a long time nobody attempted to do it again but after COVID some big circles contacted ZUN directly and he allowed them to do the crowdfunding campaigns. After that ZUN changed this unspoken rule to actual rule: crowdfunding is not very welcome, but if you really want to do it, you need to get ZUN's allowance.
    2. If you want to make a new strong, solid or big (and the border of this is very vague) fanwork based on another (fan)work (for example fan album), you cannot steal art and music from the original work (examples: a lot of unreleased scripts (a few examples) (a lot of them were unreleased because of that), TCL, RE: TLC)
    3. Most unofficial uploads of official Touhou music and arranges (and doujinshi and paid fan games download links) on Youtube or other sites are considered as piracy (you should ask for allowance from doujin circles, or they may DMCA you (a lot of content from Youtube disappeared because of that (some of them, they uploaded vocal arranges of Touhou songs))) (Also, Japanese fans were surprised when ZUN said that he listened to them to refresh his memory of some his old works (first of all they were surprised that ZUN cannot remember everything, next they were surprised that ZUN listen to pirate uploads of his music)).

Also about AI. There is no strict unspoken rule about that. I have covered that before, TL;DR: ZUN don't like AI, but you can use it in your fanworks (even for doujin events). But a lot of Japanese fans don't really like AI.

Also there may be some more unspoken rules I don't know or I have forgot about.

For a lot of Western fans such unspoken rules are strange and weird, they are not in the guideline, but for many Japanese fans such rules are natural. There are also some other strange official limitations (thanks to Ruw, and maybe ZUN), but they are well-known for fan content creators because they are in guideline.

Interesting observations! I too sometimes notice differences between japanese and western understandings of the copyright.

For example, I was always puzzled why practically every japanese touhou fan video has a "this is a derivative work" introduction while many western ones don't. But it was only recently that I discovered the touhou fanwork guidelines and found out it's actually a requirement:

      (english) https://touhou-project.news/guidelines_en/

      (japanese) https://touhou-project.news/guideline/

    2. vanyk

      vanyk

Yes, you need to say that your fanwork is a Touhou derivative work. From what I see it is the way to show respect to official work. For example, Mrs. Estacion took a lot of things from Touhou (patterns and music style) and they didn't say it is a Touhou derivative work (or that it was inspired by Touhou), so Japanese fans didn't like this game.

It is sad that English guideline hasn't been updated yet.

  3. Hello. There is a little summary of changes in list in July and August. First of all I want to thank again Pinky Cat and Denist for helping with this list and finding new info: Fan books by Distant Union, The Crowd Shooting, Sanae Shooting, gensokyo.club and other media. Other lost media: Roka Enzaki's channel was deleted with a lot of Touhou Styled Music. Sadly, Suika Ibuki channel hid all videos because of copyright strikes. Added a lot of info about lost fan anime: Touhou Hakureisou, Danmaku!! Animated Series, Meteors of Triple Dimension. Added more info about Nikenme Radio streams and Which Came First, Hakurei Kannushi's Games or Beer? (I want arts from this one) Thanks to the document by Mad_Dog_of_Fujiwara and her lore den (it seems like they are the only ones who gathered info about these in one place). That's all for now.
  4. Again thank you very much for your information! So this is just another Akkoma instance. There are some alternatives like this and this. There are a lot of torrent mirrors of demo version of this game from Comiket on btdig. The game was discontinued and only demo version exists. But you can listen to ost here. Everything added to the list.
  5. Thank you very much for this information. Added to the list.
  6. There have been no updates for more than a month, so there is an update. Most Chinese Touhou sites were restored. During the second half of July the attackers mostly attacked servers related to Touhou and sometimes they attacked Chinese Touhou sites. But at the beginning of August the attack stopped. By the 3rd of August Chinese Touhou Wiki was fully restored. Some sites still haven't been restored but I think that they will be restored soon. Chinese Touhou Vote site still hasn't been restored. Chinese Touhou Vote is planned to be arranged in several months. Let's hope that the site will be restored and nothing bad will happen. That is what has happened during that time.

  8. It is complicated. On one of latest interviews ZUN talked a lot about AI. For him AI quickly becomes boring after you start using it. ZUN prefers to create things himself. He thinks that the end of technology is AI. He also thinks that the world would have to fight AI, but at the same time he thinks that AI may be used for good things. So he is not that against the AI. How does it work on practice? There are fangames with AI. There are doujins circles on Reitaisai which used AI for their fanworks. On Nicodosai AI fanworks are officially allowed with some limitations. There are discussions about AI on events. So AI is not prohibited. What about community opinion? Opinion of Japanese fans about AI is mostly not positive. AI art do not get a lot of attention. They mostly don't think that AI art is fun. People blame some doujin circles for being AI tracers (I don't know if they are really AI tracers). As Reitisen noticed the guideline says nothing about AI, that is why even some Japanese fans get confused and some people think that fanworks with AI are fully allowed. So a lot of people don't have a positive opinion about AI, but don't think that it is prohibited. So as Reiteisen said, just warn about using AI in your fanwork.
  9. Some more information about it Poster in good quality: Official announcement: (Bad) Translation: The visual publicity map of the animation of the Mystia's Izakaya mentioned earlier was announced. Preparations have begun in all aspects, let's see if we can prepare more things before the big festival. Doujin animation, not commercial animation; An episode may be about 15 minutes, excluding OP and ED; Slice of life style, relaxed and funny atmosphere; I will prepare daily matching (there are good daily matching partners), and I don't have a particularly good idea for the middle matching, so I will take a look at the situation for the time being; Do one episode first, and then do the next episode according to the income situation. If the situation is good, I will continue to do it. If the current episode loses more harm, that's it. To be honest, please lower your expectations first to have a better experience. I think it may cover some ingame events. I think the plot will be like in Touhou slice of life mangas, I don't think it will be much more complicated. It is interesting that there are concept arts of Kosuzu, so maybe we will see the Human Village and maybe she will work in the izakaya. But maybe these are concepts for later episodes. It is hard to say how often they will come out, maybe every 1-2 years, maybe like Summer Day's Dream (you know how rarely it comes out). We still don't have a lot of info about it, so it is hard to say anything about it. I hope it will be quite fun to watch. It seems like they have a very big circles, because they are making the anime and a new game at the same time. But it is good to see a new circle which makes fananime (because now there are literally only 4 circles who makes it: 舞風-Maikaze (Summer Day's Dream), 満福神社 / Manpukujinjya (The Memories of Phantasm), Kyoto Fantasy Troupe (The Sealed Esoteric History), R-note (M-1 Grand Prix); + sometimes 卯堀亭 / ウサホリ ; rarely there are some smaller circles which make anime / animations (like 回鍋楼 / AZu (found here), but I cannot find any info about them)). One day I really want to see a fananime about fancharacters (for example by Kaisendo Directs).

  11. Thank you very much! Added to the first post.
  12. Thank you very much for finding this. I somehow missed this when I was collecting info about it. I am really sorry for this. Moriya Shrine does not have the latest version of the game. The updater can be downloaded here (took here). If you notice any other mistake in the list, please write about it.
  13. I am glad you understand it well now. I don't think it will give a really big impact on Gensokyo itself if Akyuu dies (well, Kosuzu will be really sad about that). But I think it may give some impact on the human village. He is making a new printwork, maybe he would give some information about it there. I agree, but there is a chance that he would just avoid this topic.
  14. Thank you for your posts. I found a lot of Japanese posts by searching "Akyuu" (阿求), plus I knew there was some info about it on English and Chinese wikis (I love the Chinese version of Gensokyo Chronology article, because there are a lot of explanations and comments about how they calculate everything). First of all I don't know why Icefairy thought it will be related to Akyuu (I have not found any Japanese posts about this topic, but I may be wrong and there are some post about this somewhere (but I have not found them)). I don't know why touhou_station decided to put question marks instead of declaration of Touhou Vote results in the image on their twitter account. Maybe just to troll, maybe that is how they wanted to show uncertainty (of the results), maybe something else. That is why I (try not to forget to) put sources for my statements, so everyone could check them. I just wanted to show all the assumptions we make to calculate Akyuu birthday. I will try to explain more clear: We have here two calendars: ours (Gregorian) and youkais' (lunar). What is important here is that all dates in Bunbunmaru are in lunar calendar. Years in lunar calendar are called Seasons. Events of PoFV happened in 2005 in spring. There is a news article about events of PoFV in Bunbunmaru which was released some time later. The Season there is 120, so Season 0 (lunar calendar) was in 1885 (Gregorian calendar). The article about Akyuu's birth was released in Season 109. 1885 + 109 = 1994, so we know a year when she was born. The month when the article about Akyuu's birth was released is Fumizuki (lunar calendar). After some calculations (which I will omit) we can get that Fumizuki starts on August 7 and ends on September 6 (Gregorian calendar), so 31 days long. But there are around 4-5 Bunbunmaru issues per month and the issue about the Akyuu was the first. 31 / 4 = 7.75, we will assume it as 8. 7 + 8 = 15, so the article was released between August 7 and August 15. We can assume that the isuue was released quickly, so Akyuu was born in 1994 between August 7 and August 15. By her lore she cannot live past 30, so she is supposed to be dead by between August 7 and August 15 in 2024. I hope this explanation is bettet.
  15. I will give explanations here. First of all The Child of Miare cannot live past 30 years, because long before Hieda no Are made a agreement with Yama to begin the reincarnation cycle and keep memory from previous lives. So she could make the Chronicle how to defend against youkais and to make humans safe. Hieda no Akyuu was born on the seventh month (Fumizuki) on Season 109 (lunar calendar used by youkais (and tengu)). As it was calculated long before by Japanese Touhou Wiki Fumizuki begins on the 7th of August and ends on the 6th of September (recalculation) (but to be honest this may be not accurate, but here we will think it is accurate). Season counts years from the time when the Great Hakurei Barrier was made, which started 60 years cycle. From here we know that PoFV happened on Season 120 and events of PoFV happened in 2005, so Akyuu was born in 1994. Also we know that Aya publish around 4-5 issues per month and the issue with info about Akyuu birth was the first in Fumizuki (but it may be a week number, not the issue number). So the article was published between around August 7th and August 15th. It was the date of release of article, but as we could see from manga it doesn't take a lot of time (around a day) to publish such news (but from here there are some thought that for some news it may take more time to collect data like for Hakurei shrine rebuild). So we may consider that Akyuu was born between August 7th and August 15th (but such calculations are not very accurate). Useful images about this topic: Looks like misinformation. During that time Touhou vote result will be declared. Original image below: There have been a lot of memes about the death of Akyuu, but ZUN stated (sorry cannot find the source, maybe this) that Touhou has "Sazae-san time" time, so nobody ages and nobody will die. But fans are interested if ZUN will kill Akyuu because of her lore or he wouldn't because of "Sazae-san" and not to make Akyuu fans sad. That is why a lot of people talk about it.
  16. There is some interesting info that richard_effendi missed. On the stream it was said that ZUN is writing an awful lot of manuscripts now [for a printwork, but nobody knows what kind of work it is, as I understood from discussions]. Where is a theory that this printwork would be related to Akyuu. From what I read from tara_touhou it seems like he hasn't said anything about a new game.
  17. Hello, Pinky Cat! Welcome to the Moriya Shrine forum. I have seen your list of Touhou links, it is great. I hope your researches on Touhou fandom go well. Thank you for your post. Your researches on Distant Union are really impressive. I have not heard about this circle before. You found a lot of interesting information about them. I can only congratulate you. Distant Union's lost media is added to the first post.
  18. I am a Slowpoke, but what has happened to Roka Enzaki? She deleted all her Touhou styled music and deleted her Twitter account.

  19. Some updates: The attackers began to DDoS Touhou sites again. The mirror for THBwiki is still up. Official statement on https://bbs.nyasama.com :
  20. Some updates: Some more sites and forums were restored. Current focus of the attack is QQ chats and Touhou-related servers. A static mirror for THBwiki is up. Today attackers tried to damage the database of Nyasama. Some chats were closed because of the attack.
  21. Some updates about the situation. The attack became a little bit weaker and some more sites got restored ( https://status.patchyvideo.com ) (+ sites related to lilywhite) But there are some reports ( https://tieba.baidu.com/p/9087498757 and screenshot below) showing that the attackers just changed their focus on QQ bots (like Telegram bots) and Touhou related servers for multiplayer games. Sadly, sites related to THBwiki and Nyasama are still not restored. The goal of the attack is still unclear.
  22. This post was edited, because it had misinformation about thwiki.info. Sorry for that.
  23. Thank you for information. Added to the first post.
  24. More updates: https://cn.thdog.moe and https://cloud.lilywhite.cc/front are down. These were sites for patches, modifications and fangames. Also: https://bb.lilywhite.cc https://say.thdog.moe But there are some good news: Some sites are restored (source: https://tieba.baidu.com/p/9085446556 ).
  25. Updates about the situation. The attack became even stronger. More Chinese Touhou sites are under attack (added some reports about that in the first post). In some threads in Chinese forums some messages dissapered. There are rumors that the attack is from the West (USA, Canada). Static mirror for THBWiki is down. Info about it below:
