Alright, to start off, I'm going to be talking about GNF (Gensokyo Night Festival), which has been a game that I've been following for pretty much the start of development ~around 2019. Lots of people talked about it and even shared some screen shots of some of the more cooler scenes (Marisa's being the more dramatic one). I'm pretty interested in this project, even though, as of now, it seems like the creator hasn't posted since 2022 on their most recent account (they regularly do art), and it has been 7 months without an update to the current development, though half-year waits for development have happened before. Nonetheless, I wanted to share the current scenes with some GIFs until hopefully the next update comes out and it has more content. Spoilers (Includes some bosses from the beta branch and some secret areas)1 point

I bought this demo (can't really call it a game for now) very early on, fresh off of experiencing Luna Nights, enamored by its excellent artstyle, creative gameplay, and the promise of a metroidvania that was guaranteed to have those two things going for it at the very least. I enjoyed it, and part of me does resent the likelihood that it will never get finished. But I can't say I regret buying it, because the artstyle and gameplay gimmick are still available there. It's not worth $13, which is what it's currently priced at, but I'm still glad it exists.1 point

Controls: GNF is mostly a platforming game geared towards controller players, though keyboard controls still work just as fine. Z is your melee, X is shoot, and C is to lock onto enemies for shooting. You also have gauges that can be filled with density or sparsity. Gameplay & Design: Gameplay is a little bit empty as most of it focuses on bosses rather than regular enemies, which are scattered and far between. You can rush through enemies to advance, and there is no reason to defeat them yet, but there is a currency system in the works. Level design is also a little bit iffy at the start, though it gets better later with stage themes. The gameplay is a bit too fast depending on your frame rate; unfortunately, there is no option to control most of the game's settings, which might be hard for potato PCs with the graphics and those with faster hardware to have some stable speed as the game doesn't allow you to choose an optimal frame rate in the game, which might make boss fights way too fast to enjoy. Combat also needs a rework, as most attacks require you to risk pausing to deal good damage, which will always punish the player with the boss performing an attack within that time frame. Boss fights and visuals are pretty much the only thing that's going on in this game until new content is released. I would say this game is in a very early beta stage, given the content not being fully flushed out and it feeling empty. It has all the systems in place, but not a lot of content to explore and experience. This game started development around ~2019 to 2024 with the help of PLAYISM and WSS Playground for advertising and general management. Overall, the development of the game at the start was pretty strong, with monthly updates on the current development of the game, but there were hiccups from time to time and even longer than 6-month hiatuses for updates to then about 3-4 month updates to the present last update in October 2023. All of which seem to be happening again with the stage 3 hiatus. Generally, I don't recommend getting this game now due to these facts and the development hell it is in. Wait until this game is fully released for more reviews, though it is probably going to take more than a year or two (maybe three or more) given that the history of development is not favorable. Here is the general statement on Steam, which is the original statement from the launch in 2019. Not very good, as it seems the developer has introduced too many promises while being a solo developer, which is unfortunate.1 point

Wow! The graphics are really pretty and nice! I especially love the secret spring. Nonetheless all of the other locations also have so much detail with the foreground, background, particles, etc. I'm really impressed that one person can make all this. I think I might take a look and give it a try. Speaking of which, could you please tell more about GNF? More specifically, what you do in the gameplay, how big/long is the game, how much of it is complete, that sort of thing. I'm hoping a short explanation about it will help me and other readers to decide to play the game or not. Anyways, thanks for sharing! It looks beautiful!1 point

Technology is generally misunderstood in Gensokyo, in much the same way magic is on Earth. Gensokyo's natives follow lives of physical toil and union with nature. This simple—but not unsophisticated—lifestyle leads to them to underestimate the value and use of science. Items like cellphones sold for thousands on Earth are paperweights sold for a handful of Mon. With some creative use, you can use modern technology to deceive Human and Youkai alike. Though be exceptionally cautious, as few will indulge open acts of trickery. Electricity is a scarce resource in Gensokyo, and most technology will swiftly become useless. However any technology you have may be sold at the Kirisame-ya Trading Post, Kourindou or Otherworldly Curiosities for reasonable prices. We also provide recharging services for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, for 2 Shu per device, or 2 Bu per hour of use. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= “Come on. Let’s find a gate.” Exhaustion stung at Oscar’s feet. Though it was not so bad now, that he was so near his destination. Silently, Agappa-chan watched him go. Before following after him. Her sandals ringing out after him. The wall extended for a few dozen yards. Rounding a corner, Oscar couldn’t help but smile with satisfaction. Ahead was a wooden gate. Flanked by a pair of paper lanterns swaying in the evening breeze. The area looked unguarded, without so much as a watchman on the parapet overhead. That was fine. He had a way around it. Reaching into his pocket, he felt around for a moment before pulling out his cellphone. The device had only so much power. About 44%. There was no reception, but all he needed was the bluetooth feature. Scrolling over to the media player, he hummed to himself as he looked over his options. His music player was mostly filled with children's songs, often from movies. He would have liked to choose a self-aggrandizing song, but would the townsfolk react well to that... At his elbow Agappa-chan looked up at him with a blank expression of curiosity. Normally, her gaze would have creeped him out. This time, he couldn’t help but smile. This had to get a reaction from her. Turning on the ‘record’, button, he spoke with as powerful a voice as he could into the phone. “People of the Human Village! I am Oscar Diggs, the Great and Powerful! Magician Magnificent, and Sorcerer beyond compare! I am weary, and have journeyed far. Grant me the mercy of your shelter, and I shall reward you.” Finding the perfect option, he clicked on the song. Setting the timer to begin playing thirty seconds afterward. Easing the phone into his pocket, he instead reached into a pocket of his cloak. Pulling free a set of colorful balls. Yellow, red and blue all shone in the moonlight. First one ball, then two, three, and then eight. In any other circumstance, he might have felt stupid performing without an audience. But magic was all about presentation. As the balls bounced from one hand to another, music began to emanate from them. The low dulcet sound of the Blue Danube Waltz emerging from the bluetooth speakers inside. At the sound, Agappa started backwards in shock. Her already partially agape mouth falling open in her surprise. The small victory brought a smile to his face, even as he threw one of the spheres in his hand over the wall. Another followed, then another three. Each carrying the sound as they bounced and rolled along the cobbled streets or alongside thatched homes. Strange sounds in the night were not uncommon in folktales and warnings of the Youkai and Kami. Though they had little in common with the strange Western music playing just outside their windows. It was not long before the sounds drew out the townsfolk. First peeking from behind reed curtains, then stealing looks outside their doors, and as the orchestra built, finally stepping into the street. After all, there were no capering goblins or dread spirits in the street. Each ball continuing to bounce, as the orchestra played. Some children stared in wonder, while others played or danced. The sounds of surprise and wonder carrying over the wall. Oscar smiled. Sometimes he loved his job. But not as much as he would with his next trick. As the music turned low, each ball in the street transmitted his voice. The sounds of the village sounded more urgent now, and it was not long before faces appeared over the gatehouse, gazing down at the traveler and his companion. All that remained was to see who answered his demand… =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Who answers the gate? = A concerned school teacher in a blue dress and a very strange hat. = A historian who has never recorded anything quite like this. = A book-renter, who does not know what kind of magic this is. = A hopeful blacksmith, mesmerized by this strange display. = A friendly spirit, distracted from her duties serving drinks.0 points
