  1. Our first post without Team 9 in a few months has dropped! Sorry its so late. I was hoping to have it up yesterday, but I lost track of the time and before I knew it, bedtime had snuck up on me. Narumi's a character I haven't reached yet in 2hu, so feel free to critique me on my portrayal of her. Even if her appearances are sparse, I'd like her to be accurate. One quick note. Normally, a tie between two options invalidates both as the next possible response. Though after reflecting on it, it feels a little like I am penalizing you guys for doing something you logically shouldn't be doing. So from now on, any ties won't disable either option. I've also been thinking of setting up some kind of stat system and inventory, so you can keep an eye on Oscar as he grows smarter and more capable over the story. Idk, what do you guys think?

  2. If you have cause to be in the Forest of Magic, never fear! Our handy Trail Guides are a small but elite group of Youkai and Kami who know the forest well. For a small fee, they will carefully escort you through the forest. For those seeking a less safe but more economic option, Otherworldly Ventures Inc has marked numerous trails in the Forest with ribbons of various colors. While these are used during daylight hours by residents of the Village, be warry. While few Youkai in this era are man-eaters, more than a few will happily mislead you by rearranging these ribbons. Either in hopes of extorting something from you, or simply as a practical joke. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= His return to loneliness was unwelcome, to put it mildly. Oscar still didn’t know Team 9 well, but they had been nothing but nice to him. Excluding Wriggle’s temper or Rumia’s hunger. They had been better friends to him than any he had back on Earth. For awhile, he had even felt welcome in their company. Now, as quickly as he found them, he was alone again. The sounds around him were familiar, but unwelcome. The chirp of crickets, the calls of owls, and the low cry of other nocturnal animals. Each unseen in the forest, illuminated by only the stars and the odd firefly. And each a reminder of how lost he really was. Well. He wasn’t completely alone at least. “Uh, Agappa,” He managed, one hand rising to his hat. Cirno’s warning was still fresh in his mind about her. But it wasn’t like Agappa would want to be lost out here either. At his voice, her hood turned visibly in the dark. Swiveling slowly, even as her eyes blinked quickly. After a couple of scans, her eyes settled on a knothole on the tree next to him. Her expression did not change. “Yes, Ningen?” “Again with the Ningen...So, you know the way out of this place, right?” The question earned him another few blinks. Her head swiveled, the yellow hood standing out well in the dark. After circling in place, her hands reached back for her eyes and-- “Actually, nevermind.” The last thing he wanted was to hear her taking her eyes out again. Agappa’s hands thankfully lowered, even as she turned to a shrub on his right. “Do you really have to do that?” “Eyes don’t see false things well.” “False things?” “Yes.” “What are false things?” “Lies.” “What do you see well then?” “True things.” The conversation didn’t seem to be progressing in a positive direction. Oscar simply nodded politely. Something her brown eyes seemed to miss as she continued staring at the shrub beside him. With a sigh, the young magician turned back to weighing his options, when he looked down at his sleeves. His ‘magic’ rockets were still in place along his arm. And while he had spent one volley while scaring Rumia, he still had a second volley. That wouldn’t be necessary for help, a single flare would do. All he had to do was light it. That came with risks of course. Who knew what lurked in the forest waiting to eat him, or worse? But its not like he was at any less a risk just standing here. It took a few moments to fiddle with the ignition. The flares were meant to fire at once, not one at a time. But after some work, he managed to undo the wires to the rest of the contraption. Raising one hand, he pressed the trigger. A single red rocket surged into the night. Letting out a low scream as it flew to the sky and burst. The thunderous clap surely catching the attention of anyone in a mile. As the light burst, he thought he could see something looming in the background of the forest. Shadows melded to form a body and face, which leaned back among the trees as though to hide from sight. Oscar peered into the trees as the light faded, unsure what he had seen. If only he had another look… The crunch of the undergrowth to his right brought him spinning around. Knowing Team 9 all preferred flying, he expected to see a wild animal, or maybe another hostile Youkai. Instead, his green eyes took in a pale, anxious face beneath a bowl-like hat. Nervously scuttling backwards, putting a tree between he and her. Before peering around it. She resembled Agappa, if only just a little. Though the hesitation in her face showed much more emotion than Agappa’s calm stoicism. “Ah...g-good evening Agappa. I see you found your Outsider.” “Naruko.” “Its Narumi, actually…” =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= = "The fairies were petrified of Agappa, but you seem like you're friends." = "Its a pleasure to meet you, young lady. I am Oscar Diggs IVth, Magician Extraordinaire. Now, about a way out of this forest..." = Agappa probably won't be the best pointman in this conversation. Maybe endear Narumi with a magic trick. = "...You were looking for me Agappa?" = Run back along the way you came. Maybe you can take one of the other pathes.

  3. Yokai, the spirits and monsters of ancient Japan, and natives of distant Gensokyo. Unlike many other cultures, Yokai have mostly remained the same over time in Japanese culture. With natures, personalities and origins which have mostly been preserved. Because of this, its fairly easy to select a monster, spirit or lesser god which somehow ties to you in your everyday life. Whether that is your job, hometown, your faith or hobbies. I was originally going to make this a 'choose which yokai you would be' thread. But knowing weebs, 90% of the choices will be the really famous ones. Kitsune, Oni, Yuki-onna. And part of the charm of Touhou is how the series can introduce more obscure Yokai and legends to the limelight. Instead, I thought I would make this a challenge. Go to your favorite resource for yokai (I would recommend yokai.com myself) and search up a Yokai who somehow relates to your life. Whether its your job, where you life, etc. Pick the one that seems to relate to you the most, or is the most interesting. Tell us about them, and how they relate to your life. How would you be turned into one, and how would you feel about fitting in and living life as a Yokai in Gensokyo. To start: I work as a nurse, usually dealing with headaches or more serious brain disorders. You would not think something so specific could have a Yokai associated with it. But that's where you're wrong. The Bitan is a beast with a mysterious name. Almost nothing is known of its origins, diet or lifestyle. They are flabby, large beasts more like underwater cattle than anything else. Their bodies are coated in dragon-like scales with fins. Their tails are split in two, and they have horns and beards like dragons. Nothing is recorded of their natural behavior. But according to the people of Taketomi Island, drawing the image of one and hanging it upon your wall is said to cute headaches instantly. As proof, the people of the island point to how headaches are so rare on their island. It was first recorded in 1832 during a survey of the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa) and was said to be a lowly maid transformed as a sign of an ancient king's holiness. Living as a fat cow-fish-man in Gensokyo is sure to have its barriers. Especially if I would be confined to the Misty Lake and the surrounding waterways. Hopefully there would be a way to the Human Village or Genbu, so I could work as a physician. I imagine I could sell statuettes, engravings and paintings of myself to Yokai and Humans to cure various ailments. But it would be pretty boring with only Wakasagihime and maybe Nitori to talk to. And I doubt she is into fatties. Life is as cruel in Gensokyo as it is in the Outside World.

  5. Hi Yumetou, no need to feel bad for taking an extra day! The appearance of Narumi makes things interesting. She's a character I barely heard of, and I assume several others don't know her either. It will definitely make the story more unpredictable and fun :). At the same time, it's a bit tougher to vote for the next choice. What does everyone think? Should Oscar befriend Narumi without fear, or be careful not to trust her? Skimming through the wiki, she doesn't seem like a huge threat to humans, so I chose the option to show her a magic trick. Compared to Agappa, I think she is more timid and easier to impress. We'll see I personally never noticed the options being disabled. I can only see the options available to me, if that makes sense haha. In other words, I don't know what possible options I'm missing out on, so I don't feel penalized. But that's just me, others might feel different. I think that's a great idea! It would be perfect at the end of each post. Since these are weekly posts, it's easy to forget previous events and lose track of Oscar's current status. I do wonder though, what sort of stats will you list? Will it just be something simple like a "level" count and inventory items, or have more detail such as energy levels, location, injuries, etc.? Of course, making it too detailed might take too much time, which might cause more stress and delays, and that I can never hope for. However, my thinking is that once you design the system, you can quickly copy-and-paste it for future posts with minor changes. In the end it's up to you, but I think it would be the addition would be worth it :D Anyways, it's cool to split from Team 9 and see a new character emerge from the shadows! Excited for the next chapter as always

  7. Here we go... Sadly, there is no download link for it. Magus night tried to recreate it, but they deleted all the files: But UltraStory's extra (thcrap patch for TD) has Kasen as boss. This patch changes extra bosses for most games (from 6 to 17 (100% changes extras since IN)). A lot of creators just decide not to publish their works (maybe because they are not polished, not ideal). 8. I do not generally interact with the horror genre, as it is usually by nature a glorification of blatantly evil things. That being said, horror is also utilized as an aesthetic nowadays, with the actual elements of horror being relatively minor. What actually constitutes as "horror" as opposed to merely horror-related can be a bit ambiguous, as I think will be clear by the end of this month. My relationship with Dead by Daylight is, by my own admission, bizarre. I can honestly say I've been following its development since its release, albeit without actually playing it, despite everything about it being seemingly in conflict with my beliefs. Admittedly my investment has nothing to do with its aesthetic, but rather a fascination with its asymmetrical framework and as an example of the complexities in live-service game design and community maintenance. More relevant for this thread, however, it its exemplary sound design; music and ambiences composed by Michel F. April serve a vital role in both gameplay and atmosphere, while also advancing the artistry of the project. The officially released soundtrack is limited to compositions from the earlier years of development; while menu theme variations were released for later years, much of the in-game music remains unavailable except through gamerips. Some of the best music this game has is unfortunately also the hardest to procure properly, but thankfully much of it has been archived through Youtube, allowing me to share it here. Note how the layering works in the last two tracks; this is a better representation of the strengths this soundtrack has. In addition to the music actually used, some scrapped compositions have been leaked over the years. One in particular has stood out in my memory for years now, and is probably my favorite piece associated with the game despite not technically being part of it. While there is no official title, it was datamined around the same time as an in-game function called the "Archive" was in production, so it is associated by most with that.

  9. I find that it is best to choose depending on the characteristics of a person. This takes into account his background, his current situation and how much Gensokyo is cooking him alive in order to find the right state of mind you'd feel you're in and then pick a choice. Sure, the best option might be to swallow your pride and ask Agappa, but that is for Oscar, to my state of mind, too honest, too vulnerable to be safe from another Rumia situation and he still has his pride as a person to keep. Now then, I'm a trickster first and foremost, so my own votes tend to skew to trickery or assuming that trickery is going on and acting on that assumption, but Oscar has plenty of reason to fall back to the tools he is most familiar with to try and ward off the unfamiliar and definitely dangerous Gensokyo. A flare would allow you to see something as a human, at least; and I don't think Oscar knows whether the plants are sensitive to light at this point in time. even though he is trying to find the Sparrow of Night-Blindness he should probably not go through the forest effectively blind, now should he? he'll at least know when he's running straight into a Youkai's mouth before the final judgment is laid upon his soul by the Yama; if he is lucky. Just a night without his usual tools can also spice things up, as he is now out of familiar items other than a magician's set of clothes to fall back upon. He would also have been taught to call for help if he ever got lost in a forest with kids, and the best way to do that and entertain the children is to flare for help.

  10. It's still Wednesday where I am, and I have one more feature to add to this month. As I've listened through these soundtracks, an inevitable comparison has been in my mind to what I would consider the quintessential Final Fantasy soundtrack; not FFVII, not FFVI, nor from any other entry in the franchise, but which nonetheless captured the spirit of the project in the best possible way. I also realized at some point that I'd never done a proper feature for it since a brief mention way back at the beginning of my time here, to which mention I had later noted an intention to return thereto. Well, I couldn't ask for a better opportunity than this. While Uematsu notably contributed a number of tracks toward the end of production, the majority of Chrono Trigger's OST was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda. As a SNES release, the soundtrack is most immediately comparable to FFVI. The comparison is a fair one; both are strong in imaginative arrangement and variety. FFVI, in my opinion, makes stronger use of musical theme, having more prevalent leitmotifs throughout. Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, succeeds in an area I've yet to see matched: instrumentation. As I've mentioned before, a lot of SNES arrangements suffer from over-ambition, trying to capture a sound that's just out of reach. The better SNES soundtracks are played to their strengths as a blend between classic chiptune and synthesized instrument sampling. This Chrono Trigger does excellently, balancing its orchestral tracks against hardware limitations in a way that, ironically, invokes more accurately the feel of orchestra. Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, not because of nostalgia (of which I have none, having yet to play the game), but simply out of respect; it had been and will continue to be the standard by which I judge the music of the classical gaming era. But this isn't technically Final Fantasy, is it? Lest I cheat the month, here's one last piece for the road, a particularly impressive remix I found during the month.

  11. I'm currently watching Madoka Magica from beginning to end, Though I wouldn't recommend watching it without being mentally prepared. A much lighter recommendation would be Reincarnated as a Sword, though an arachnophobia warning is in order for the second half of season one. I could spend a while gushing about it, but I won't... yet.
