Alright this is something you all probably have dealt with and talked about. Every Touhou fan has seen that person talk about the Western side being not that dedicated to making Touhou content and or is less dedicated to appreciating good content. I feel like this is part of a deeper problem, maybe something dealing with the way the internet has changed the way most people grew up with consuming content. Tons of content on the internet is mostly just brain food with bright colors and or provoking material (Some edgy crap, and or sex appeal bait) Now here is the point. I feel like Western content in general is burning me out. I've seen everything from the darkest pits of the internet to the general tip of it. Now I feel like I've wasted my time as all of it was designed to prevent people from actually having a conversation and act like mindless machines who are driven by instinct for high-quality short form content and or constantly trying to be a dipshit to others for a reaction and or generally stupid takes because their parents never loved them. I will start with talking about my country, Romania: We are a small-medium nation just at the border of the Balkans with Eastern Europe. In general, foreign pop culture used to, and still does, comes with a very long delay, sometimes of even 5-10 years. When we were getting cartoons as children, many of them were already at their god knows how much-th rerun in th US and the West (yes, we grew up with Cartoon Network, Getix and later Disney Channel in the early 2000s), and we were never getting a full series, just a few seasons that were dubbed. Anime broadcasting was not a thing, at least not since the end of 1990s on Romanian television. Even today, many people would not understand if you made a reference from a foreign series, as nowadays it is mostly on us, the teenagers, thanks to the internet, to see what is going on outside. And for this reason, for a lot of time, I thought Touhou would be a completely niche series, that nobody heard of. Things changed though when I found out apparently there is a Romanian Discord server dedicated to Touhou and its community. The series is still very much underground here, as our pop culture seems to be very much still isolationist (possibly a result of 45 years of communism, followed by 30 years of uncertain democracy), and so people were not too interested in foreign pop culture. Anyway, a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one: (this is not a promotion; I am simply amazed a community exists at all in here)

In my country, touhou is extremely obscure (if not unknown). Anime has been getting popular and every teenager knows what it is, but most of them have watched only these series and nothing else: Attack on Titan, Death Note and Demon Slayer (ofc also Pokemon). Not that there's anything wrong with them, but I've heard people say stuff like like "Bro, Attack on Titan is the best anime ever" while only having watched that and Pokemon. I'm getting a bit off track, ain't I? Also, I once managed to get a friend to try EoSD and they played a bit and then never touched it again. Another time I managed to find someone from my country who played touhou online, but it was in a forum where they hadn't been online for 4 years so take that as you wish.

tbh I can ignore this kinda stuff just fine but nowadays it's so common to have this kinda content (not just for touhou, but anything) that your options are to simply pretend it doesn't exist, consume it (moderately) or ignore it the most touhou content I consume is fumo related stuff (good videos) or MMDs which generally have a lot more effort put into them than a random ass "mommy" touhou vid

This is actually quite an interesting topic. I've been thinking quite a bit about it recently, and sometimes, I feel like this brain-rot might be real, just to a different degree from one person to another. Heck, had it not been about myself starting to question it, most likely I wouldn't have thought about bringing up my most recent topic of discussion (even if it is mostly a recycled text from an older thread just put separately and with some sparkling images for greater emphasis)

Alright, time to (finally) answer the first set of replies to this thread: Of course, there is so much more than just anime/ However, I have used the example of anime and manga (and fanart, but that one is already part of the style) just due to the fact it has been the most influential medium for me for the past over two years. It is the thing I was exposed to the most, and therefore has had a much greater impact than things like (western) cartoons, fashion models or TV shows. To put things in n contrast, I actually remember that I recently read a BBC article in regards to onsen baths and the idea of body positivity. I did get corrupted, as the exposure has been at a very high level (or better said, a great amont). Tens of thousands of Touhou images, more recently accompanied by other thousands of images first coming from original works, then other establishes franchises as well. Guilty on that one Yeah, there really has been a rather great shift in recent times about tastes. I can't remember what triggered it, but I guess there we are now. As for keeping contact with other people, I do that when I can, and also see and meet them like almost daily in the classroom. Therefore, why I have the feeling they still look like a bunch of children whose only trait that makes them adult is the age number in the ID card. Even I have a lot of misconceptions about Japan itself and the society it holds, as ti was seen in previous threads when I tried talking about them based on knowledge from media, online discussions and even pop culture/impact of pop culture and memes about Japan and Japanese. Always gathering more. If I see something I like, I add it to the stash. Like I have said, I am not very sure where my beauty patterns have developed from. It felt as if one day I woke up liking something, and pretty much ended up confirming that taste. I think it might actually be the first time I am aware about something like that. However, I am a little concerned. I was wondering... isn't it rather superficial to say that "type" solely relies on a girl having black, shoulder-lenght wavy hair? Like that's not very hard to achieve - just dye your hair back if needed (bonus points if your hair color is naturally dark) and get a haircut. That's why I'm wondering if I'm being superficial. Even with that though, I still feel it waking up what some would call the "monke brain" feeling. And I'm still trying to figure out where I got that taste from. I may have seen tons of drawings in the past couple years with that features, but not so much in real life (maybe I haven't paid so much attention either). And even with these "types", how does it happen you may sometimes get the hots for someone who might be completely the contrary to your supposed tastes? Yeah, I guess you might be right about this one.

I didn't know Bossa Nova originated in Brazil; now I'm wondering about the origins of other genres. I'm a big fan of Irish folk, but I'm not sure if that fits the criteria of this thread (i.e. can I post Irish if I'm not Irish?), so I'll keep it minimal here.

That's a really interesting question actually In my opinion, people that overconsume any media, like games, animes and movies/series can end up breaking the barrier between these 2 and end up thinking of the real world like if it was the media they like A good example are the beauty patterns in general, people use really beautiful women and really muscular man with beautiful hairs and eyes to think of a model of a man or a woman, and the same way it can happen with stuff that aren't real, like anime Actually, people get way too used to stuff they end up seeing on popular media and can end up adapting it to real life, i think there's a limit of where this confusion is safe or not, like, i personally don't see a problem if the person has a really specific taste for women and men, but i do see a problem when the person starts to get in bad situations and mood due to this confusion I personally had the same situation during the quarantine, since all my contact with girls was with messages and most of them used anime or popular media characters profile pictures, but it changed as soon as i returned to my daily life of going out to work and study since i had to talk and deal with real women and etc, i think this kind of situation can happen due to 2 things: Way too much media consume; Way too little contact with real people. I experienced both at the same time and tbh, it is a situation that you can get over easily if you talk more to real people and consume more media that has real people instead of too much fictional media, but it depends if you can deal with this situation without problems or not, but well, at least for me, having more contact with real people helped in only some days I don't think is a problem if you can't describe how a real girl is since there's a lot of kinds and all them are different to each other in their ways, different to describing anime women since they usually has several similar features and details

When I do not listen to rock or anything symphonic, it seems like I have been listening to more and more music from Japan (be it Touhou related or other series). Therefore, the recent example of two songs from Amagami SS: The opening theme of the show for the first half of Season 1 The end credits theme for the second arc of first season. I saw a girl cosplay as Reimu one time at highschool but that is really about it. However, whenever I drive out of my apartment complex, I see a car with like 10 fumos.
