What makes your favorite Touhou character your favorite?

kinda self explanatory, basically is there something about your fav character that made them your fav?

for example it could be something about the design, the theme, the abilities, or just the fact they’re cool

 

for example and starting off:

koakuma is my fav bc i love her design, she had missed potential, and just overall a cool character 10/10

okuu is tied with koakuma bc of the cool ability of nuclear manipulation, and her design looks epic af, plus the theme hits hard

i could list my top 3 but eh

Seija is kind of top-1, by the way. I just couldn't think about better rank for her.

As for actual top-1, it's very simple, I'm Reimu main. Started from Touhou 1.

Mine would be Orin, if it wasn't already obvious from the profile picture.

Though I will note that Chen and Goutokuji Mike are close, as all three of those cats actually touch upon different facets of my life and ended up about the same as I would given their situation (and I survived through it...) It's just that I feel the most connected with Orin at the present moment and will probably stay that way for a while.

just joking, i think her personality and character design are amazing, and sometimes i relate to her being childish and all

i just generally love all the fairies in the series, they represent the cheeky but kind face of gensokyo and touhou

other characters i like are the prismriver sisters, i love their concept of being musicians and their backstory too

and for last i guess renko usami and maribell hearn, their own story and the way it laces with gensokyo is sooooo nice

First post here, but I would say my faves are Reisen, Yukari, or Aya. I don't really have a super deep connection to the characters personally, but I love writing stories with them. Usually funny stories. I find Yukari and Aya to be some of the easiest characters to put in a comedic situation- due to Aya's pushyness in reporting and Yukari's tendency to be anywhere (literally). I personally really respect Reisen- if I could, I'd really want to be her friend, considering she doesn't turn me completely insane. These aside I'm pretty simular to Kogasa. We're both pretty random and both have heterochromia. Boo!

I won't say who mine is. Because if I say it right away, a certain kind of fan will roll their eyes. But I want you to hear me out.

 

I love my favorite character because of her indomitable spirit, and the friends she's made. She's not the most powerful character. Far from it. She's decently intelligent, having at least an elementary education. She is surrounded by friends she cares for, though can get stuck in her own head. She finds happiness in the simple things in life, and never worries about things outside her friends, hobbies and being a better person every day. But when you need her, she'll move heaven and earth to be beside you.

Fanon edition. The reason why I say that is...if you look at her in just the lore. She doesn't have a lot of the details that we think of when we hear her name. She tends to be a loner and isolated, a far cry from her fanon form with more friends than anyone else in the setting. She has a pretty petty personality, and usually seems bored and listless. But a lot of her fanon qualities just make her seem more real. Her canon details aren't without their merits though; she can actually spell and knows basic arithmetic. Making her (probably) more intelligent than much of the cast. And while the fumos and memes help her fanon's carefree nature, I just like how nothing stops her. When she wants to do something, she keeps trying until she succeeds. I find that part of her inspiring.

 

If we are talking about strictly canon though, definitely Yukari. I'm not even going to thirst-post like I do for a joke on Discord. The woman's one of the most crafty figures in the lore, walking the fine line between an ally and an enemy at times. Probably not top-ten most powerful, but she is definitely one of the strongest Youkai around. She cares deeply for the setting, and even disregarding her fanon personality traits, seems to have a soft spot for Ran and Reimu. Even if she doesn't treat them like her daughter or niece in the games.

Part of the reason is relation to my road to lunatics. At least for top-4. Personal experience with danmaku is a major factor. After all, danmaku is a way of self-expression.

For example, my first Extra clear was in PCB. Music and danmaku are getting surprisingly enjoyable when you are making actual progress. Although I liked Necro-Fantasy even before that. Normal 1cc took quite a few attempts back then. As for initial reason for my determination, I wanted to see Phantasm boss. I succeed. But in the end, Ran became my favorite.

Normal 1cc in MS is kind of turning point, it's when I realised that I'm actually getting good. Shinki itself is impressive. Her danmaku is something special, and so her role and abilities.

Aya is related to Touhou 11 and photo games. Firstly, Reimu+Aya is the best shot-type ever. And I enjoyed their story more than other's. I even got my first Lunatic 1cc in Touhou 11. Besides, I cleared all scenes in 9.5 and 12.5 and for some reason I liked how she does her job. I cleared all scenes with Hatate too, by the way.

Raiko got pretty high because I like Touhou music. That's it.

For me it's mostly character design/outfit. Color scheme is also important. However, that's made it hard to pick one character as my all time favorite, although Koishi and Suwako are up there!

My favorite would probably be Sanae

She just feels like the most "realistically relatable" to me if that makes any sense, which is kind of ironic considering she's essentially half god.

• Comes from the outside world, up until then lived a normal life
• Probably a huge geek (I read this somewhere, forgot where)
• Thinks everything in Gensokyo is cool, especially extermination

I mean, you could connect Sumireko to this to but... 2 words: Superiority Complex.  And I like Sanae's design more, though I would admit its a bit plain compared to other characters.

I was thinking about asking something of the sorts, but finding an already-existing thread is even better!

My favorite character is Iku Nagae. I feel I'm rare breed nowadays, but I do like miss oarfish a lot.
Her design is great to me. Beautiful clothing, red eyes, purple indigo hair, and the part of being a celestial is sincerely appealing to me. It's very easy to get lost on those beautiful scarlet red eyes, can't lie. Such grace.... Just look at her for a moment, please.

I think highly of her (even though she's just someone who wants to do her things in peace), and if even a Youkai can ascend it's nature, why wouldn't we be able to do it? We can turn into better people, y'know? And if a crab is lecturing you about evolution, you better take notes! Chop chop!

Her ability of reading the atmosphere is good for reading the room and making smoother moves when talking to people (also to avoid landmines), and it's great for someone who likes going for walks but don't want to get under rain (me). Not the coolest nor the most useful ability, I know, but it has it's uses.

Her theme is okay (too repetitive but suits the occasion really well) and her pre-theme is even better (gives a great feeling of anticipation). I just wish she appeared more on the series.

I also like other characters a bunch (Kokoro, Koishi, Byakuren, Eiki, etc.) but I'll leave that to another opportunity.
In fact, I'm impressed that so many people like Koakuma and Daiyousei. EoSD is a very liked game, but originally these characters didn't even had names. But even so, the community loved them and turned them to be greater than they were supposed to be. So yes, I'm impressed in a wholesome way.

Also, I made the character sorting not long ago, so I feel like this is a good place to share it. Feel free to either judge it or ask further!

I don't know about PC-Era characters, so I haven't added any to the list. Any character in or above the 70th position is a character I actively like. Any in between 71th and 118th is neutral/indifferent, and after that are characters I either dislike or would not get along with.

I wonder if we'll ever get a crab girl. I'll be looking forward to that day.
