I've been checking into games i used to play when i was little

So, i think everyone has games that used to play in the childhood, so i wanted to create a thread to talk about it =)

This thread isn't only for me to talk about it but also for you guys too! Feel free to share the games you used to play and your experiences with them, and if you still play them, feel free to talk about how it is nowadays too =D

I used to spend hours playing since i used to have nothing to do when i got back from school (i didn't have a phone till i was 16), so i used to turn on my old pc and play some fun games i used to find on internet with my brother! I also had a PS2 where i used to play nice games like GTA:SA and GTA:VC (i grew playing GTA), and honestly, i miss that times so much, so i kinda play some of those games till nowadays, even having condition to play the newest games, they don't really get me the same way as the ones i used to play as a kid do

I prefer a old laptop to play CS 1.6 with an wooden table on a room with lots of internet cables than a gamer PC with a whole setup to play other heavy FPS games, i think the only modern game i play nowadays is GTA 5 at all, i love the simplicity those games had, it's always so comfortable to play it!

Some that i used to play are:

Ace Of Spades: Build And Shoot (i talked about it in another thread)

Boring Man - Online Tactical Stickman Combat

CS 1.6

GTA:SA (i used to love playing it and just kill people on PS2 xd)

GTA:VC (the same thing as GTA:SA xd)

Halo:CE (the multiplayer)

Minecraft (i used to build things alone using a ww2 mod xd)

Roblox (mostly zombie tower and robloxity)

Retro City Rampage

Super Mario World

Super Mario Bros X (is a engine where you can create your own Mario levels using features from all the games, i used to create and play levels for myself xd)

Super Fighters Deluxe

Top Gear 1  (i don't like the other ones xd)

Unturned (my pc couldn't run dayz so i used to play unturned on it's release, it was really simple and fun)

Some images of Halo:CE, AoS, SMBX, CS 1.6 and Retro City Rampage:

Wow that’s a lot of war games xD

My favorite games was really the one with crazy stuff and a high speed gameplay, Sonic 2006 is my ultimate favorite game, it’s fast and difficult

For me it was (in alphabetical order :3) :

 • Animal Crossing

 • Crash bandicoot

 • Psycho soldier

 • Puyo Puyo

 • Rayman

 • Resident evil

 • Sonic adventure (and all Sonic games  actually)

 • Twinkle star sprites

 • Vecotrman

 • WarioWare

It surely is xd

I grew with this kind of game thanks to my brother that's a completely addict into FPS and other shooting games xd

And when i started getting into history stuff... I got completely addicted to a game on roblox called Naval Warfare (even if a Japanese with a M1 Garand doesn't has any sense, it is more fun than it looks xd), if you play roblox, that's my recommendation, and also something good in the mid of several children games xd

I'll check on it! I remember loving sonic when i was younger, the reason was youtube in the time xd

It was so common to see youtubers talking about SNES, Mega Drive, Atari and other classic consoles... It was a golden time! I loved sonic because of a cartoon i watched and also some sprite animations you could find in the time (like mario vs sonic battles), it was so fun to watch!

Oh, those games are classics! You have a really good taste! I used to love games like Mario, Sonic, Crash and WarioWare before getting into my FPS games phase (cough cough, i'm in this phase since i was 14, FPS games are amazing), they still has a special place on my heart, specially because of all the time i spent on youtube watching gameplays, animations and reviews

A nice thing, is so common to find pirate PS2 games here till nowadays since it is a common console for people to have, and i remember a specific disk... A disk that literally made my childhood

It was called Snes Station, it had several classic games and was basically a emulator for PS2 (it wasn't really called Snes Station, but i used to love playing on the SNES emulator that came on it, since it was a disk with several emulators, like Atari, Master System, SNES and even Commodore [idk if i wrote it right xd]), i see them everytime i go out to a fair and there's a games shop

I only found the menu music it had, if you want, you can listen to it, it was the music that i heard my whole childhood!

I used to grow up on grassroots network stations so games really grew on me. It was a way to relax every Saturday for me, being dropped off at one by my gramps and being enveloped in it, all the beautiful bright lights of it.

There are some of my favorites on PC that grew on me a lot:

GTA: VC (the days of typing in cheat codes and just go wreck stuff, long before I have a brain to actually go and do the campaigns)

Left 4 Dead 2

Alien Shooter

Fifa Online 2

COD: Modern Warfare 2

For the PSes, I only had real fondness of PES 2013 on the PS3. It was that time when football enveloped me the most and I was churning into football games, as of that much. Later down the line, I did played Far Cry 5 and some more NBA titles on my brother's PS4 but that's about it for the PSes.

I actually grew up on arcade stations, actually. Some of my fondest memories come from those. Pump It Up, Time Crisis, Deadstorm Pirates to name a few. And in some of them, my most beloved game that I still come back to this day, really: The House of The Dead, my most favorite arcade shooter of all time.

There is just something about it: the visuals, the grimy atmosphere of zombies being everywhere, the eerie scenery that feels like it was fully shrouded with despair... I loved everything of it.

I beat the full 3 games of it, minus 4 because I can't find a HOTD4 cabinet anywhere. Fondest was 3, of course. First and only time I beat a game on a cabinet. Fully unlocked all the endings too (it's simple if you know how, haha).

There was something about it... the murky setting of the AMS headquarters in it's own, and the whole post-apocalyptic world in itself that truly draws you in. Moss drapes the walls and ceiling, dim lights flickering in the moment, and the little bits and pieces of blood, rubble, and others else as you traverse through the levels.

You felt like you were rushing with your own movement as you flicker the light gun in your hands (it was a shotgun with 3) and pumping the trigger into undead hordes, and it was really good. Sega AM1 really elevated the gunplay and graphics to match the up-and-forth new engines at the time, so it does show in it.

I really, really do want to talk more about this game, and the franchise as a whole, but that would take time. A lot. And there are Youtubers out there who made retrospectives of the franchise, but I wanted to give my own thoughts, and my personal feeling for it, and what truly made this game an all-time high for me.

For now, I'll leave you with this retrospective video of HOTD3 by Ltarget, who speaks it more perfect than me, to be honest...

We used to do the same on GTA:VC xd

Before i found out GTA:SA, i used to like killing people and driving cars in GTA:VC without any reason, but it was so fun for me when i was 8yo xd

I always wanted to play the original COD:MW2, but i never had a Xbox 360 or PS3 (i only had a PS2 and a potato PC till i was 14yo xd), it's nice that you grew playing it, it was a amazing game that i surely wanted to play!

I used to love football games too, mostly because of another pirate ps2 disk that was a modded PES with Brazilian teams (it was called Bomba Patch), i used to always play it with my father! Those games are basically the best to spend a afternoon playing!

Btw, i already was a Far Cry fan so, i recommend you checking also Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon! It's amazing!

I always wanted to go to arcade stations (it just increased some time ago after watching High Score Girl), they always seemed so beautiful for me and i always wanted to visit them, but since my parents didn't let me go out by myself or spend some time away from them, i never managed to go to one =')

Only in my 12yo birthday actually, that was a nice memory, i remember playing a zombie and a racing game there, it felt so magical, is definitely so different to play on a regular PC!

Btw, i just searched for images of The House Of The Dead... I feel like it was the game i played in my first time going to a arcade, it definitely is so catching! You're completely right about the atmosphere of the game, i miss when zombie games used to be more popular, they had something so different to other games... I think it is because of all the adrenaline of needing to kill and take care to not be killed, it had a perfect mix of horror and action at once, we need more games like that! Is actually nice that you talked about a zombie game, since i'm trying to turn my minecraft into a zombie game using loot and other mods to make of it a apocalypse xd

Quote

Oh, that's amazing! I really find cool that you managed to beat a game in a arcade, it's something really difficult! Good job!

The atmosphere zombie games have is surely amazing and immersive, is something that not even the most realistic FPS would be able to give... I love how all them are so near to our reality even if they're just behind a screen, you can feel the fear of end up being attacked and at the same time you feel the adrenaline of having to kill, and without a lot of resources that you can use, it's so magical!

I can imagine, if zombie games are already so immersive with a mouse and a keyboard, imagine with a light gun... That's a experience i surely will want to have the next time i go to a arcade, now that my parents can't hold me back, it's my chance xd

I really do wish zombie games got back to be popular, like, they're so good! More people should have the chance to try them, it's an experience in another level!

Honestly, as a child I did not really have access to video games. Probably the firs thing I have ever played was Prepelix. On an old computer at home, my father installed what I would later learn to be an arcade style game in which you were gaining points by hunting some silyl looking birds. And that game was not really something we were playing on a daily basis, but more as some sort of tradition/ceremony whenever we had guests or relatives visiting us. It was fun to set competitions of who score the most, given the arcade nature of the game and ability to save scores at the end with our names.

prepelixtoamnascreen.jpg

The second game of my childhood, an the one I am still fond of, was Rome Total War. Published in 2004, the game was just two years younger than me. Until that point, despite the fact I had played Prepelix, I was completely unaware what a video game is. Until a visit to one of my best friends at the time... One day, after one of our regular toy soldier battles organized in his room, he decided to open his computer wanting to show me something. And then the magic happened. I was so fascinated by that game, the idea that you could control armies and conquer the world (on the campaign map mode). There was also quite a variety of armies to pick from, going all the way from the Romans, ancient Greeks, Egyptian and Middle Eastern factions all the way up north to the barbarians.

Rome-Total-War-Alexander-PC.jpg

Battle example between the Greek City States faction and Roman Julii family (the Roman faction was split into 3 playable faction based on families/clans - the Julii, Brutii and Scipii, with a fourth unplayable faction being the Roman Senate; the mechanic was done so that eventually you could enact the Roman civil war and fight for domination of the whole empire like in the 1st century BCE)

To me, Rome was my first true experience when it comes to video games. After my friend had show me a few battles and how it works, he decided to bring another laptop to the room and that was the first time I had my own battle experience. Not just a battle against a preset AI faction and army, but again him. It was quite a nice experience provided by LAN multiplayer, and even if he crushed me like a pulp in the battle, I felt like I wanted more of it.

To me, I think the intro of the game is just as legendary as the game itself. Even now, almost a decade and a half later, I can still remember the reaction when I first saw it:

Eventually, he has also shown me the following game in the series, Medieval II Total War. In time, Med2 would become my favorite Total War game, if not my favorite game ever, and is something I always love coming back to especially thanks to all the brilliant mods and total game conversions created by the community. Yet had it not been for Rome, I would not have ha access to the world of Total War games.... Now, there is a Remastered version of the game, but I never checked it out (the price is a little excessive - 45 Euro for Remastered compared to the 3.75 Euro I spent for the Gold Edition of the original; and now, you can no longer buy that version separately, since Remastered also gives you access to the original version). I stil prefer the original game though.

Romebox.jpg

Oh, and I think the same day I was introduced to Rome, I also got my introduction to one of the Medal of Honor games. I can't remember which one of them was it, but I am sure it was not MoH Airborne, and it started with a D-Day landing mission.

These are my earliest interactions with the world of video games. From there, there was a weirdly long hiatus period in which I have not played any game on computer for many years, and only relatively recently (about 5-6 years ago) did I get again to playing both the old games I was familiar with, as well as expanding towards other games like Napoleon Total War, Shogun II Total War, World of Tanks, Men of War Assault Squad 2, War Thunder and eventually Touhou.

Aaah childhood games..
I love talking about this!!

The first ever game I remember playing is Sonic Adventure 1, I remember playing it on the weekends when I was in preschool still, and when I wasn't allowed to be on the PC during the week xddd
I have great memories with this game, I used to play a lot of Sonic 1 (8-Bit, I thought it was the 16bit ver and I got confused when I saw it, and I knew emulation was a thing when I was like 6/7 but I didn't know how to do it back then) and Sonic Drift, since I had the Director's Cut.

Speaking of Sonic, I had a phase where'd I'd play a lot of ROM hacks, I did that when I was 10/11 I think. My phone was full of ROM hacks hahah, the ones I played the most were Jester's Challenge and Sonic 2 Retro Remix.

I also played some other, lesser known games, from a thing called the GameHouse Game Collection.

I used to game so hard on that shit, I loved playing Hamsterball, Tap a Jam, Puzzle Inlay, Incredible Ink, and seeing screenshots and hearing music from all those games now makes me feel so nostalgic. Please someone tell me that you played this pack as well, or at the very least Hamsterball 😭

Hamsterball has a balling soundtrack as well! Skaven makes awesome tracker stuff.
Also Puzzle Inlay's OST goes so fucking hard as well!

As a kid, I always wanted to play G-Mod, Portal, Half-Life and other popular games like that but I never got the chance to until now, and that sometimes does make me sad xd

Number 1 Alice, Meiling and Youmu fan! jaooooooooo

This game looks fun actually xd

I'll try finding a download for it someday and play it, i imagine how it was to play with the family, sounds so nice!

It's amazing how it conquered you before and it conquered me now

I need to play this, i'll look for a download tomorrow (it's kinda late now and i'm going to sleep soon xd) and i'm sure that i'll have fun with it xd

Btw, is nice that you used to play with toy soldiers, i used to play a lot with those!

This is the kind of game that i really hope that has mods, because i'd love to use them on it xd

The game focus on Roman civil war also sounds nice, i'll see if it has a campaign so i can try beating it, this game got my attention just for it's images that i saw before started reading the post, i really feel like it will be worthy to play it!

Guess i found another game that will make me spend more than 5 hours in front of the PC like AoS

Oh, then there's a sequel! I'm interested on it, maybe i'll try downloading it together to the other game

Idk if i'll buy the game since there's "other ways" to have it that i can try looking for, but if i like it, i'll probably buy it in the future!

Napoleon Total War called my attention, i love history and mostly games about the Napoleon Wars, Zulu Wars and WW1, i always like playing games related to this theme!

I think a lot of people had a great childhood thanks to emulators!

I didn't know how to use them so my brother used to help me, thanks to him, i met Top Gear and several other games that absolutely made me love playing on my computer! And i also wasn't allowed to be on the PC during the week xd

I never played Sonic a lot but as someone who grew with creepypastas and youtubers that talked about old games, i have good memories with it (like spending sleepless nights because of sonic.exe or trying to play sonic 1 but finding too difficult xd), mostly the Sonic cartoons that i used to watch a lot!

That was my case with Mario xd (please don't tell it to Nintendo, i don't wanna be sued in the same value as the Colombian GDP)

ROM hacks surely are something amazing, they manage to turn games that are already good into better with new models and sometimes even new phases and items!

A childhood series of mine was this shoot em' up series called Chicken Invaders. This was the first time I ever played something in the shmup genre, so of course it was hard to play when I was little. It's humour and the fact that you are shooting chickens in space was enough to satisfy lil' me.

Of course, there is also the Sonic series. My first experience with this game was the demo version of Sonic CD. I couldn't even finish the second level. Later on I played Sonic Generations, Sonic Colours, Sonic 1, 2, 3&K, and finally got my hands on the full version of Sonic CD, which ended up being my favourite of the classic games.

Another one is the Kirby series. Who doesn't like this pink puffball? This one started a bit later since I didn't own any Nintendo console at the time (I still don't). It wasn't until 4th grade when I discovered the power of emulation. I started with some Wii games, like Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 (still have to finish those) and among those, there was Kirby's Return to Dreamland. After finishing it, I feel in love with the Kirby series, and wanted more. Later on I played games like Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kirby Mass Attack, and Kirby Triple Deluxe.

Ohhh dear...

First, I had a bootleg Famiclone (charms of living in a post-Soviet satellite country... WHICH ACTUALLY IMPORTED A CERTAIN HIGH-QUALITY BRAND OF FAMICLONE FROM TAIWAN OFFICIALLY, at least before the proper anti-piracy legilsation was put in place), aside from obvious things like the first Mario, highlights:

- Code Name Cobra (or rather Human Weapon: Dead Fox, as I got the Japanese version. Charms of having only pirated cartridges!)
- Banana Prince (also the Japanese version)
- Tiny Toons Adventures, 1 and 2 (...the second I had in Japanese lol)

On PSX, also with some pirated games:
- Medal of Honor - because of pirated disc, the game ran in grayscale only. Call that a bug, I call that a feature XD
- Spec Ops: Airborne Commando - poor man's MGS, I guess.
- Metal Slug X, Japanese version
- Worms Armageddon - interestingly enough, a Polish version, on freakin' PSX. I got a pirated disc, so dunno if the game's PSX port was actually released in Poland translated (alongside the PC version), or it was a fanmade hack.
- The Mummy - adaptation of the movie. Mediocre, I guess?
- the first Worms

PC Gaming time!

- Robin Hood: Legend of Sherwood - a Commandos-like, but with more dynamic mechanisms and at least slightly more forgiving. And your people actually make at least token effort defending themselves in melee...
- Worms 3D - possibly the most played game by the kid me
- Call of Duty 1 and 2
- Medal of Honor Allied Assault
- Heroes 3, of course... although never really got into it.

It's nice that a lot of people here grew playing Sonic, i used to love Sonic because of videos and other stuff like cartoons, even without having played it, it's interesting to see that people here used to have similar interactions with that!

I love Kirby!! I wanted a plush of it after completing Kirby Dreamland 3, it certainly is a fun (and hard) game!

I should get back to play Kirby games, i'd love to remember of how fun it was! Btw, i grew with emulators, it's a really beautiful and powerful thing xd

Oh, the Famiclones! They're extremely beautiful (it's amazing to have at least 50% of my stuff as pirate material), i always wanted one! For me, they're better than the original NES, like Gamestation for example, with the release of Gamestation 5, i can literally have a NES with a PS5 skin, how can people hate piracy when thanks to it we have such beautiful machines? (joke alert)

Oh, i already played Tiny Toons Adventures with my father a few times! Is a fun game =D

I'm glad to say that i had all my PS2 games 100% pirated and bought for less than R$5 (Brazilian currency, and nowadays R$5 is the same as $1)

And Worms, i love this game, i wonder how i forgot to add it to the list! I played it so much! Also Metal Slug X, another game that i played a lot with my father, such good memories!

I have been playing COD2! And a personal opinion, i miss when COD was so good like that, i bought the new WW2 and Cold War ones and... I regret it

Medal Of Honor is a classic, is nice to see that people here also like this game!
